Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

It's matters not who pays them, whether they get paid as a direct gov't employee, or paid by the contractor with funds paid by the gov't, etc. All of them are free to leave at any time, and all are there of their own free will. I cannot imagine being sent on a mission to rescue contractors, and asking who is paying them or are they worth it. That, to me, is ridiculous. They are all part of our national effort. As a former military helicopter pilot, the thought would never cross my mind.

Here's another example of putting our military in harms way all the time to save civilians who aren't even contractors. Our medivac and combat rescue teams are deployed all the time to save indigenous people seriously injured and evac them to either civilian or military hospitals, and the vast majority of them are not even contractors. These flight and medic crews put their life at risk everyday in a combat zone doing this.

There you have it. :thumbs2:

Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

You are still lumping mercenaries in with contractors. That is wrong.

I have a friend that is a retired ICE agent that was hired and sent over to Afghanistan to help train the locals on boarder control and other border policing tactics. He was highly paid, highly trained and highly regarded by the troops with whom he work. They treated him no different than they did other Americans there. The US government seeked him out for his experience and expertise and sent him over. He was also paid by the contractor group that was paid by the US government. He served his country. He was worth getting out. He was a contractor and not a mercenary just like many of these people.

Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

If they are there at the request and on behalf of the United States, we are responsible for getting them out.

Now, if you philosophically disagree with sending them in the first place, that's a different issue. If we send them to help accomplish our mission, we need to get them out when they are in danger or things go bad.

Bottom line, our efforts and the huge price we've paid has been for not if the terrorists aren't stopped.

Define "mercenary", because I didn't meet any over there.
Hired private ex-soldiers, now AKA security contractors.
Exactly.

Here you go CPD. This is what I'm talking about. What you agreed with is NOT the definition of a mercenary. It's an American contractor.

I also gave you a link explaining why they are there and why we are " giving" them fighter jets. Based on the article, they purchased them.

It appears we should care about these people and make sure they get home.

You do realize you are insulting someone who was a security contractor for the US over in the sandbox, right? He has forgotten more about security contractors and mercenaries than you will ever learn.
Not insulting anyone. But if he was paid by a foreign power to carry a gun thats his business and his problem, not the United States.

What makes you think the people that are the subject within this thread are or were paid by a foreign government? It appears you've read the definition of mercenary and changed your tune.

Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

Why do you have such a negative opinion of them? Do they not support our mission and fill roles that aren't filled by traditional military personnel? I know the term mercenary sound scary kind of light assault weapon but they do fill an important role. I think general statements like that are shortsighted and unwarranted.

If not, ok. Not sure what to do about it though.
I'd bet air strikes (drone strikes if you prefer) will start hitting within 24 hours.
Not mercenaries, employees of the DOD there to prepare a transfer of fighter jets to the Iraqi government.
Why are we giving them fighter jets?

Looks like we "sold" them to them.

Re: Mosul falls to ISIS

I don't believe there was any WMD there when we got there. That doesn't mean there wasn't any before we arrived.

Based on current events, I feel like we accomplished little to nothing in Iraq other than removing Sadam and his barbaric regime. The price we paid monetarily and, more importantly, in lives of our young soldiers is tragic. However, we must keep in mind we are working from the advantage of hindsight.
