Just to clarify, I introduced the Explorer post kids when discussing the drill because that was who our local LEO used in our drill. I have no problem with kids volunteering to participate. I do not agree that a drill such as this should be conducted during school hours with the entire student body as if it was a fire or tornado drill.
I also do not believe suing over something like this is warranted.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
I understand. When our guys did it, there were very few teachers, some administrators and the only kids were from the local explorer post my son is in.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
It's not to train the kids. It's to train the administrators and first responders.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
This went way beyond a "lockdown drill". That is why it was done with volunteers.n5wd wrote:Well, if you're upset at your kid's schools doing a lockdown drill, you're probably going to be apoplectic when you find out they did a mass-evacuation drill sometime this school year. Schools in Texas are mandated to do all kinds of drills each school year including TWO types of lockdowns (internal threats where all of the inside doors are locked and no one gains entrance to a classroom, and external threats, where all the outside doors to the campus are locked, and no one gets in from the outside). Oh, a fire drill each month, and a severe weather emergency drill as well.Cedar Park Dad wrote:...
I know that school do lots of things without parent permission. They've had lockdown drills without our knowledge. This is just another form of that.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
As far as I can tell, those that didn't like it thought they used the entire student body whether they volunteered or not.texanjoker wrote:Excellent training with volunteers. Just like for CHL, one should train as close as practical to the real thing. Kudos for such a realistic training venue. Those that don't like it don't need to volunteer.
If that would have been the case, I would have considered more of an anti gun scare tactic than a valid training drill.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
I just went back and realized the entire article didn't open the first time I read it. It does not appear they did this with the entire student body present and they used volunteer students. I think the makeup is overkill but to each his own.
I am glad to see the police agencies preparing.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
I consider this totally different than the Shattered Dreams mock auto accidents that schools put on to influence students driving decisions when it comes to drugs, drinking and texting while driving.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
I think it is good to have drills. I also think there is a way to do it that promotes training and preparedness without creating unnecessary fear and anti-gun feelings. Over dramatization can be counterproductive.

Re: Active Shooter Drill in Schools
The law enforcement agencies in and around Boerne held similar drills on a weekend when the students were not there and the student body did not participate. The LEOs did use some of the explorers as participants but not the general student body. They also did not use makeup. The makeup seems only to add fear unnecessarily.
I think the way our guys did it is the right way to do it. The way they did it in the article is overkill and the negatives from scaring the bajeebers out of the kids outweighs the benefits of the training the officers received.
