The violence attending the 1968 Democrat Convention was part of the shanghai'ing of the Democrat Party by the doper dirtball hippies, the Kerry-Fonda-Clinton Alinskiites et al crowd in league with the communist party. It's been all downhill ever since.
After Humphrey in 1968, the last of the old Democrats that Truman and Kennedy would have recognised, McGovern and McCarthy led them downhill all the way. Those old style Democrats found a home with Republicans, and now look what a mess that has become!
