The offender in this case was VERY lucky that he didn't get ventilated.
Why do police officers get special treatment? In practicality, I can't argue with the rule as outlined above, but in terms of the law, a LEO assaulting someone is just a criminal with a badge.
Note a LEO using necessary force to arrest someone isn't an assailant.
If a police officer is trying to take you into custody, it would be ill advised to draw your weapon.
That being said, a police officer would not tackle you from behind if you were not an active threat to anyone.
Keep calm and carry.

Interesting item at the end of the story it says that the CHL was represented by Council on Islamic-American Relations. I didn't know that they were a CHL support group.

So you're saying there are no bad cops and that no cop would ever misinterpret a situation and do something inappropriate? I would agree it is unlikely but that doesn't make it impossible. And in a situation like this particular case, you might not know it was a cop if you didn't see him behind you, or if he wasn't in uniform. I agree though that resisting a cop would likely be suicide. However, there have been instances where cops have just assaulted people, for instance, in a restaurant or bar, and were not attempting an arrest, and not acting in the line of duty, but just being an ordinary jerk. That can be a pretty dangerous situation too.
