Looking for a Car Lockbox

#1

Post by WaitingGame »

Hi all,

I'm currently considering picking up a pair of these, one for my car and one for the wife's, but some of the reviews on amazon and other site say the lock is made of plastic and can easily break.

Can you all recommend a descent lock box for my car? I'm not planning on using it for overnight/extended period storage, it'll just be for those instances where I happen to come across those places where I can't carry. I'm also looking for something pretty affordable in the price range of $20-$30.

I appreciate your help.

I've been using one like this (not this one) for a while now. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bulldog- ... l+Products" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The only caveat is I don't believe it could house a full size gun. I put a Sig P239 plus two mags in it.

Look at Center of Mass lockbox.

In the $40.00 range and well built.

That's what I use.

I've got 2 from Center of Mass.... http://www.center-of-mass.com/Store_InCarGunSafe.htm
Made to 2 sizes.

I've been using for 5 years and have been very happy.

Thanks westex1948 and Abraham. I'll look into these. I like that they use a combo instead of a key.

I have the center of mass combination lock version. A couple of points. These are good for preventing smash and grab type thefts. Any tools, e.g., hammer and large screwdriver, and you can get in. Also it only takes maybe 30 minutes to cycle through all possible combinations. Good for what they are for however. Fort Knox they aren't.

Yeah I've read the same things about them. My plan is to only use them when absolutely necessary and not for long periods of time. I don't plan to stay long in places I can't carry anyway. Thanks for the info.

If you have a truck, there are companies making console vaults which sit down in your console. They ought to be at least as good as those and not attached by a cable. They at least make it more than just a smash and grab situation. I have heard some vehicle door locks are absurdly easy to break into. The ones I saw use either a bicycle type lock or a 3 to 4 number combo lock.

I have one of these and it works well. It should prevent smash & grab thefts, but a determined criminal with some time will defeat the lock. My guess is that the cable could be cut relatively easily.

I have something like that for my car. It's not amazing, but it prevents someone from simply picking up the gun and walking off with it. I figure at least they'd have to work for it, and if they're willing to do that there's only so much I can do anyway. Get a secure enough safe and they can take off with the whole car if they really want it. It's a last-ditch solution for the rare times I unexpectedly have to disarm. I also use it when traveling -- when I'm staying somewhere I consider secure, but still want an extra measure of safety when I'm sleeping or otherwise not carrying (more because I have young kids than because I expect someone to try to steal the gun).

I was seriously looking to buy one of these until my truck was stolen from the parking lot at my job. I'm pretty sure that it would have been taken as well as additional damage done in doing so. With that, I decided against purchasing one.

I saw a lock box on the shelf at Costco this week. Might see if it fits your need.

I thought I would just through this out there, but Academy Sports and Outdoors is having a huge sale on their NanoVaults. They are now for a limited time, $11,99 instead of the regular $24.99. Huge savings for those whom are interested!
