Memories.....the early 80's were a strange time for me, young family(wife and 2 toddlers) back from the FRG(my daughter tells me I can't use FRG anymore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Germany without an explanatory note), returning to civilian life, finding out working a job sucks, making the right decisions for me and the fam, woof....

The 60's and early 70's were a time change unparalleled in American society. Popular music mirrored, some may say drove, those societal changes in a way never before seen. No music group, that I'm aware of, epitomizes these changes more than The American Breed.

Top Ten million selling single, 1968:

A number of record label/management/personnel additions over a 5 year period finally produced another big hit for the group:

Top Ten million selling single, 1973:

Yes, The American Breed begat, The Breed begat, Smoke begat, Ask Rufus begat Rufus. With the addition of Chaka Khan they hit Billboard gold again. The journey must have been epic!

For a country boy at heart stuck in the middle of the suburbs. . . this song is a retreat.

I thought this song by Randy Brown inspired by the Richard Drew photograph was appropriate for this day. It was shared on Face Book by Wrecks Bell of The Old Quarter in Galveston. I had never heard it until today.

A Top 20 Bollywood/Hindi film "Lakshya" chronicles the journey of a slacker who, inspired by watching Arnold in "Commando", joins the Indian Army. He eventually completes his training and while participating in the "Kargil War" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kargil_War achieves his Goal (lakshya).
If you've never seen a Bollywood film, but are curious, "Lakshya" is good first choice. With a run time just over 3 hours the film is only half the length of an average Bollywood production.
"Main Aisa Kyun Hoon" (why am I like this)is the slackers lament over the expectations and disapproval of family, friends, and society over his lack of desire to accomplish anything in his life.

We all have on occasion dealt with great disappointment or loss. The pain can seem overwhelming, whether a dream of your own or your hopes for another, matters not at all. One of the things that allow me to bear/deal with my own loss is the song "The Impossible Dream" from the musical "Man of La Mancha".

The pride of Boise Idaho, Paul Revere and the Raiders were a force in a Rock and Roll world dominated by British Invasion bands. They even wore faux Revolutionary War uniforms to highlight the fact that they were an American band.
With minimal production and Mark Lindsay's raw vocals The Raiders had a string of hits from the mid 60's to the early 70's. From the seminal "Kicks"(#400 on Rolling Stone Magazines list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time)to the multi-platinum "Indian Reservation" their sound was distinctive and is now viewed as a proto-hard rock synthesis that inspired many of the power trios and quartets that followed them.
The band appeared regularly in the U.S. on national television, most notably on Dick Clark's Where the Action Is, Happening '68, and It's Happening, the latter two co-hosted by Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay. They also had a memorable cameo on the "Batman" TV show episode "Hizzoner the Penguin".

Sadly founding member Paul Revere Dick passed away today at the age of 76.
