Fascinating. I am a major aviation geek AND consider myself erudite in WW2 history. I have never heard about the Green Cross flights. Thank you.

Used to drive by/to Atsugi NAS a bunch and would almost always think about MacArthur landing there for the first time before the official surrender ceremony.

Ditto, and me neither. It really makes you appreciate the complexities of surrendering one military to another when spread over such vast distances. Not quite the same as Appomatox Courthouse.Dragonfighter wrote:Fascinating. I am a major aviation geek AND consider myself erudite in WW2 history. I have never heard about the Green Cross flights. They should have arranged the surrender at Pearl Harbor...

The formal surrender right in Tokyo Bay was pretty spectacular. The might of the Pacific Fleet safely at anchor in Japanese home waters, documents signed on the deck of a battleship, with waves of combat aircraft flying overhead -- it was an awesome show of force and a scene we'll never see the like of again.
