I scored a 97 on the night qualification. Here is how it went down...

No lights at all, you could barley see your target and we were shooting glocks without night sights.

6rds at anchor point (point black range shooting from the hip) I did ok on this, shot low and could not see where I was hitting the target so I couldn't adjust.

6rds 5yrds, one hand strong hand, could not see sights on gun.

6rds 5yrds,weak hand, this is the one where I shot 3 off to the left in the 7 circle range and caused me to lose 3 points. Again, could not see anything and it was best guess where I was shooting.

12rds, 7yrds, 1 reload, 20secs time limit. As soon as the first shot it fired they turn on the lights and we can see our sights and target.

12rds, 10yrds, 1 reload, 30sec time limit.

8rds, 15yrds, no time limit.

Only 1 person shot a 100 and everyone qualified. Got a quick turn around for tomorrow for our day qualify. I should do better on it only difference is we move back to the 25yrd line and shoot 14rds,(I believe) long shot for a handgun.

I would think that giving students an opportunity to fire a gun equipped with night sights after they've gone without would be a useful exercise and would clarify why the $85 bucks or so it costs to purchase them is a really good investment.

Shot a 95 on the day qualify. I did really well until we went to 15yrds with 12rds and only 20secs. I took too much time in the first mag and had to shoot the last 6 off really quick. Shoot 3 off in the 7 ring. At 25yrds we had to shoot 8rds no time limit. I jerk the trigger on 2 and that plus the 3 was how I got a 95.

After everyone qualified we got to shoot attack targets and steel plates. I did well on this for the most part.

Trigger control is still something I'm struggling with. The 5.5lb trigger is just too heavy for my taste. All my range guns have a 3.5-4lb trigger pull. Other then that the glock is great, I got small hands so it's a little to big but I can make due. I'm glad this week is over. I hate to say it but I'm sick of shooting.

1. It really helped me with reload drills and trigger control. To be honest I can drive nails at 10yrds, beyond that is where I need to improve. I shoot left of the target due to poor trigger control.

2. I would have been lucky to score a 80 which is minimum score to pass.

3. That brake cleaner is great for cleaning a gun.

Yup, if you always clean your gun outside where you can use the stuff and still breathe without coming down with lung cancer.

Otherwise one of the water based cleaners like FrogLube, Hoppe's Elite, etc. is the way to go.

We would spray them down outside and let it dry for a minute. The brake cleaner really drys them out so you have to be generous with the oil. It works great for the trigger mechanism or any place you cannot get to with a rag or patches. I need to get me some frog lube for my guns, all I ever use is Rem oil.

Found a video of another class doing the driving out at the range, same old cars we used. That was by far my favorite week.

Here is what I want for my duty weapon, this is assuming it's ok with my future department. Sig Sauer P226 in .357 sig. I also want night sights for good reason. I can pick up one on GT distributers for $799 before any upgrades. I already have 2 9mm handguns and don't really want 3. Thought?

I don't know how much leeway you will have choosing your sidearm. I like Sigs also, but I would pick a duty gun that I could shoot the best. Maybe some of the LEOs on the forum can shed some light on this topic.

Exactly what I was going to ask, but Bill beat me to it. The .357 round is one that folks either love or hate. I highly recommend finding or renting one you can try out to find out which group you fall into before parting with all that money.

Also consider total cost of ownership - which includes looking at what ammo costs, how available it is now and how steady the supply is.

You might do a comparison with a Springfield XDM, which comes with a very nice striker fired gun with a single action trigger in 9mm, .40, or .45 with night sights, a duty holster and a duty belt for what that base Sig would cost you. If you get the compact model and a few of the full size magazines with the grip adapters, you'll have a one gun solution for both duty and off duty carry and can keep a lot of cash in your pocket.

The S&W M&P family is also very much worth a look, as are the ubiquitous Glocks.

I would strongly discourage you from buying anything before you have a chance to shoot it and find out how well it performs for you.

Ive shot .357 before and even though its more recoil I liked it. I will try to shot the firearm first but I don't know of any gun shops that allow you to do that, doesn't hurt to ask though.

If your stuck on getting .357 sig then you get a glock .40s&w then switch the barrels out. Just putting that out there as an option.

After putting 500rds down range with the academy's Glock 17 I have no disire to get one. The grips are way to big for my hands and the trigger is not my cup of tea. I just wanted something different than a 9mm and thought the .357 would be a good option.

If we were closer you could try my P229. It's a 357 and I also have a .40 barrel.
