Carry into HPD?

#1

Post by locke_n_load »

Quick question. Going to Houston pd on Travis street to pick up a police report (truck broken into, laptop stolen). I can carry as long as it is not connected to a courthouse right?

In the public areas, yes. If it is in the secure areas, no. But they must post and provide someplace to secure it, IIRC.

So I would know basically when I walk up/in if I could carry based on signage/writing? I know they can't post 3006 in there.

There's a metal detector at the door and you'll need to show them your CHL. (Private security runs the metal detector.) They will take you to the sign-in desk where HPD officers will check your CHL and have you put your handgun in a lockbox.

I need to amend my answer. If all you are going to do is pick up an offense report, that's on the ground floor and you won't have to disarm. At least that wasn't required the last time I was there for a report.

Sounds like they have the issue handled in an easy manner. That is good.

Things must have changed since then. I was there to pick up a report. 30.06 as soon as you walk in. Asked if they had a locker for chl holders, said no, have to leave it in vehicle. So I walked back to my truck with the busted out window (that's why I was there) and "locked" the doors to "secure" my weapon. Thanks HPD...

Guess we can add HPD to the list of places illegally posted by a city.

That happened recently? I'll make some calls.

Most PD's have a holding facility aka a jail. Could that cause the sign to go up?

The secure area is the only off limits place. The public areas should be OK. Where you pick up a report should be in that public area. Granted, that last time I was at hpd was years ago & long before I had my chl.
