PISTOL STORAGE WHILE ON VACATION?

#1

Post by djbeckett »

We will be on South Padre Island for a week. The motel only has a front desk safe, none in the room. We ALWAYS go to Nueva Progresso, Mexico. The wife doesn't even want me to take it, what to do?

While in Mexico, I think my only option is to lock in my trucks glovebox, which I'm a little uncomfortable with. Must I install a vehicle lock box prior to the trip?

Do people hand their guns to hotel clerks to lock up?

What if I want to swim with my wife? That means a unattended gun on the beach.

I'm awaiting my CHL. I'm new to the forum.

Several things:
1. You can not take the gun into Mexico.
2. If you do not have a CHL you can not have the gun on the beach.
3. Hotel safes are not safe even if in the room.
4. Welcome to the forum.

Check these guys out for in vehicle storage:

http://www.gunvault.com/gun-safes/nano-vault.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I use one in my pickup. I have it locked to my seat mounts with the provided cable.

My two cents.

Find a local FFL in the area that will store it. If you can't, let me know and I'll see if I can find somebody. It's an extremely safe way to have your gun retained, and most FFLs will only charge a very small fee.

I would NOT transport your gun into Mexico - PERIOD
In a locked box or any other way.
IF they find it, you WILL be in Mexican Federal Prison!

Just a few years ago, there were many news stories about people who had left 1 round of ammunition in their baggage, they were put into Prison.
Imagine the time you would get for an actual gun?

Do NOT DO IT!

:iagree:

DO NOT bring a gun into MX... Not even if it's taken apart and cast in amber.
I have used an in-car lock box for gun storage on vacation. Something like this... " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It comes in several sizes, the smallest of which can fit most compacts/mid-sze autoloaders and cost me ~$20 at academy.

Thanks fellers, that's more option than I had at 4:49 this morning. Definately not crossing the water w/gun, definately bringing on the trip (provided I have my CHL by April??!!).

Pawn shop would work in pinch, but just check that their hours of operation fit your schedule so you can pick it back up when you're ready.

There is one more alternative that I can think of.

It might be more costly than finding a pawn shop or FFL, but you can be certain that your handgun will be in good hands.

If you pay my hotel and meals for the week I will stay in South Padre and store your handgun for you while you are in Mexico.

The best alternative is don't go to Mexico. It's almost as bad as Maryland. :ack:

Dropping off at a gunsmith for "cleaning" may often be less expensive than "storage" and is less hassle to pick back up.
