My renewal is due by mid-September as well. I'm a little confused by some of the previous posts.

Could I just wait until September 1 to complete the renewal since it would be completed before expiration and not have to take a renewal class?

If so, it sounds like no carry from the time of expiration until receipt of the renewed chl?

I also have a current Utah carry permit that I believe would allow me to carry in this interim period.

I got a response back from the DPS about what happens to in-process renewal applications when the law changes on September 1. The answer was to the effect that they can't comment on changes in the law at this time, but watch the web site for changes in the future. I take that to mean "Check back in September".

If mine expired in September, I don't think I would wait. I would go ahead and renew under the old rules.

I think if it expires before you renew you have to take the whole think over again just like a new applicant! Be sure to renew way before the expiration date :nono:

Well, I'm not sure how they will work it with the new law, but it appears you only have to submit everything to them on or before the date it expires to renew according to the wording of the law.

Sec.A411.185.AALICENSE RENEWAL PROCEDURE.AA(a) To renew a
license, a license holder must, on or before the date the license
expires,
submit to the department by mail or, in
accordance with the procedure adopted under Subsection (f), on the
Internet:
(1)AAa [(A)A an application for] renewal application
on a form provided by the department;
(2)
[(C)]AApayment of a nonrefundable renewal fee as
set by the department; and
(3)AAthe informational form described by Subsection (c)
signed or electronically acknowledged by the applicant

Of course, you may be without a license for a while while you wait, and who knows if they will have the Internet renewals up immediately on Sep 1.

We need the Law amended since the State can not keep up our renewals. Upon receiving our payment we should be able to download and print a 90 day extension from our Birthday renewal date. So we can continue to carry.

Mine took just over 2 months from the electronic filing to get back in the mail. Until they put it in the mail the updates on the DPS site continually stated "waiting for paperwork."

Meh. Now that no class is required for renewals, I don't have much sympathy if you wait until the last minute.

If that process was implemented, then it would invalidate a CHL being able to purchase a firearm without a NICS check. Basically, the federal exemption for states allowing a CHL to bypass the NICS check requires a background check every five years. An automatic extension means someone could be licensed longer that 5 years before getting the background check.

Yep and the State can renew my DL the same day . I started the process online 5 weeks before my due date and With in 5 minutes all my stuff showed I was ready to go. BUT it took them 7 weeks. I understand they are apparently understaffed but if they are they need to give us a more accurate time line or further streamline the Process.

No doubt the CHL division could be more efficient but if we can apply up to six months before renewal, then I can think of a lot of places where I would rather we spend our political capital. No offense intended to anybody with different priorities.
