Also, whenever I see your user name, I see the word "Taco" and then think to myself, "what's a maoff?". ;-)

We need to have another Austin get-together. j1132s was trying to organize one a month or so ago, but didn't get enough response to justify pursuing it. You interested?

You're reading it wrong, of course.

Though I have to admit that while I'm familiar with what a Taco is, and who Mao was, I have no clue what they have to do with each other, or whatever the heck a Ffroader is.

Just get into your car and go on with your business. You don't have to explain anything to bystanders.

Basically, act like you own the place.

If a cop shows up, work with him calmly and tell the truth.

Unless they're LEOs, people who raise a fuss should just be ignored.

If others look around and see someone having hysterics, and everyone else (including you) is just going about their business in a normal manner, they'll probably just try to put some space between themselves and the loudmouth, too.
Original CHL: 2000: 56 day turnaround
1st renewal, 2004: 34 days
2nd renewal, 2008: 81 days
3rd renewal, 2013: 12 days

Get in your vehicle and leave immediately. Person freaking out is drawing unwanted attention to you.

If the screamers get your license plate number, cops will run it and know that you have a CHL. They aren't going to waste time looking for someone that isn't a problem.

Incorrect.

When a "28" (License Plate) is run it does not return that the registered owner has a CHL. Only (if they are lucky) the current owner and address. Plus of course the year and make of the vehicle.

Now, in theory the dispatcher could attempt to run the registered owners name but without a DOB (which is not on the 28 return either) it's going to take time.

In the current Texas TLETS software (NCIC/TCIC) the query for a 28 is completely different from the 27/29 (DL and Warrant check).

When doing a 27/29 check on a person, the subjects name, race, sex, and DOB is entered. It is then with the 27 return that if the person has a CHL the officer will find out.

Hope the law enforcement jargon doesn't confuse you all but I tried to explain all the codes.

How they know the race? Its not on my license and I never give that information to a government agency. Its not only none of their bussines, I concider it an in apropriate question for a stranger to ask.

He could be mistaken, or not.

The bottom line is that a CHL holder is unlikely to be harrassed by police over an accidental flashing.

He's incorrect.

I have a TLETS connection here on my desk. I can assure you if I were to run my L/P it would not come back with my CHL information.

I kinda recall in the early 90's when the State starting debating the whole CHL issue it was talked about linking the two but it never was.

I suspect it has to do with the fact that at any given time someone is always driving someone else's vehicle. Or the fact the two separate State agencies handle the two. DPS handles the issuance of drivers licenses and CHL, the Texas DOT handles the issuance of motor vehicle registrations.

Plus if the vehicle is leased the leasing company shows up for lic plate.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

A good DPS Operator takes care of his (her) Troopers by gathering all the available information, using all of the tools available to them and then processing this information in due haste thereby supplying the Troopers with all pertinent information available to them. In this case it'd be a 10-22 (disreguard) because of the CHL, or a reduction in priority from 10-33 to just normal traffic.

Is this the "new" TCP/IP TLETS system that agencies are starting to migrate to?

I've been working on that project here at my agency for almost 2 years getting ready for it but we've yet to make the switch, or actually see a demo of it.

We still use the old "green screens", with a target time frame of maybe late fall to make the transition.
