Oklahoma Traffic Stop
If a Texas CHL holder with his weapon in the closed center console is pulled over for a speeding violation by a local city officer in OK (US highway going through small town that's a speed trap), is the driver/CHL holder required preemptively to notify the officer that he is a TX CHL holder with a weapon in the center console? If not, would you do it anyway?
If the officer asks about weapons, are you required to disclose? I would assume lying to an officer is usually a bad idea.

Consult website "handgunlaw.us"
Must inform officer upon initial contact = Yes.
Lying to cops...any situation is worse than before.
You might choose not to answer. Your choice.
Hope this helps.

Re: Oklahoma Traffic Stop
I assume that I have to notify. Too much to keep up with in state laws on cross country.
I just look at the reciprocity map - if I'm good, then I can go.

handgunlaw.us makes it pretty clear that you need to inform the officer at the first opportunity in OK. If I read it properly, it is a misdemeanor with a $100 fine if you don't.

I'm having a hard time grasping how this encounter should go down, can someone please write a short scenario of how you would tell them in the beginning of a traffic stop?

1. Pull over in a safe spot.TrackinPat wrote:I'm having a hard time grasping how this encounter should go down, can someone please write a short scenario of how you would tell them in the beginning of a traffic stop?
2. Roll down windows (both sides), turn on dome light, both hands on top of steering wheel, hands empty.
3. Allow officer time to say hello. They will likely say something similar to "My name is officer Smith, do you know why I stopped you today?"
4. To which your reply should be.... "Officer Smith, I need to let you know that I have a carry permit and I am carrying a weapon today, let me know how you would like to proceed".
Then follow directions.
It really is that easy... In my limited experience.

I've had two traffic stops since my CHL. Both times proceeded just as described above. Both times received a "Thank You" from the officer.
One was a ticket, 78 in 65 on 35 in Lewisville, other time was a warning for no signal on turn.
Was not disarmed either time.
Guns are like parachutes, if your ever in a situation that you need one and you dont have one, you'll probably never need one again.
Re: Oklahoma Traffic Stop
Excellent advice, also might consider leaving out the word "weapon" so that one word is not the only one heard in the traffic noise, particularly if he has a rookie listening in on the passenger side. Just as practice with your firearm is important, not a bad idea to rehearse that phrase until it becomes automatic also.
Re: Oklahoma Traffic Stop
It doesn't say notification must be oral so handing over both licenses should count as written notice.
