Question about "Trespassers Will Be Shot" sign. HELP!
Alright so here's the story guys.
My wife and I are getting ready to move into our first house sometime this month because our second child (boy) will be due sometime in December/January . We've been remodeling for about a month now and things are looking great until I noticed something in our master bedroom. The window seal that holds your window lock was broken, so that got me thinking. With my second child on the way and this being our first home, I wanted to make sure it was the safest place possible with armor glass film and door jams to prevent break ins. At first I thought my father in-law accidentally broke it so I just jammed 2 pieces of wood to keep the window from opening, this was about 3 weeks ago. Today I went back to do some touch up on the paint and noticed that the pieces of wood that I had placed on the window to keep it closed had fell on the floor. Now I know that someone attempted to break into our home, which is kind of stupid because we haven't moved anything in yet. I ask my neighbor about it and he told me that it had to be the people that lived behind me because they throw parties every weekend in their backyard. So here is my question to you guys, should I put up a "Trespassers Will Be Shot, Survivors Will Be Shot Again" sign in my backyard that is clearly visible? I not saying that I will shoot anyone that gets onto my yard, unless of course it was a home invasion, but just a warning sign. Should I? Or am I just asking for trouble? I could really use some help, thanks!

Re: Question about "Trespassers Will Be Shot" sign. HELP!
No. Just put up no trespassing signs and get a good video/security system.
Putting up the other sign could work against you in court if you ever did have to shoot someone.

What he said. I think the guys partying will probably get drunk and some idiot will come try to provoke something. Then you just look bad in court. You are also letting people know you have firearms in your home and someone might try to break in and steal them if they see you are not home.jmra wrote:No. Just put up no trespassing signs and get a good video/security system.

I'll bet the neighbor's parties are happening at night.
Motion activated floodlights are a real good investment.
Folks up to no good don't like to find themselves on stage, and it's startling to have the lights come on. There's no way to tell if they did so automatically or not, and it has a startle effect.
That being said, drunk or high folks are unpredictable and some don't care. Be prepared.

Is your yard fenced? If not get one. I agree a dog is a wonderful deterrent to people coming into a fenced area. Motion lights are another good way to keep people at a distance.

As others have said...
1) Reinforce what you can to make it a little harder to get in. Door jambs, pointy shrubs under windows, etc.
2) Motion sensing lights in strategic locations.
3) Video cameras are a good investment in strategic locations. They have entire kits with cameras and recorders together.
4) A dog of some kind (preferably larger, although often the bark is enough as it alerts everyone that something is possibly amiss).
5) Be friendly with your neighbors so they tend to look out for you.
6) Alarm system.
You can't make it impossible for a determined individual, but you can most often make them want to pick an easier target of opportunity. I would not put up any signs, other than a generic no tresspassing, and maybe an alarm company sign. Certainly nothing that implies you already have forethought of shooting someone. Even if intended only as a scare, a DA / ADA would likely frown on that if you ever were forced to defend yourself or your family at home.

Re: Question about "Trespassers Will Be Shot" sign. HELP!
I have heard people say that upgrading your doors, locks and windows is a better investment than a security system. You can't make your house impenetratable, but you can make it more difficult so they move on to the next house. The link below is something I have heard of for door reenforcement. I am not sure if there easy ways to improve windows without replaceing them.

Re: Question about "Trespassers Will Be Shot" sign. HELP!
Thanks for all the feed back guys I really appreciate it, I'm already get some door jams installed along with some hurricane proof film put on the windows thus making it much harder for someone to come thru them. I guess I'll just install some security lights in the backyard with a "No Trespassing" sign hoping they get the point.MechAg94 wrote:I have heard people say that upgrading your doors, locks and windows is a better investment than a security system. Re: Question about "Trespassers Will Be Shot" sign. HELP!
I would save the cost of the No Trespassing sign and instead invite the new neighbors out to a nice restaurant to get to know them. If an idiot is going to hop a fence to get to your yard, the No Trespassing sign will have no deterrence.

Shame someone doesn't "rent" rattlesnakes...... The video from the security cameras would be priceless....
