Decided to visit a few gun stores recently - Plano, Tx

#1

Post by Medic218 »

I had a rare day off with nothing to do so I decided to do some window shopping in Plano and went to the three best known places and there was such a stark contrast I felt it was worth of a write up.

Gun Gear To Go
This was my first stop.
I was immediately greeted by at least two people.
Staff was extremely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and they knew what they had in stock and were eager to show me various items in the case.
I think the guy that was helping me was named Michael, but I'm not sure. He was tall, stocky and had a flat top.
I also went in there to see what they could do for me on a trade. They explained their process and why the price they quoted me was as low as it was and didn't seem the least bit put off by the fact that i declined their offer.
Even after I told them I'd just hang on to my gun they were still as friendly as they were before I ever brought up the trade.
They're not commissioned and I've never felt rushed or uncomfortable while in their store.
The place is well lit, has a great selection and they staff couldn't be better.
Before I left we shook hands and he told me he enjoyed chatting with me and to let them know if I need anything in the future.

The Bullet Trap
I've not lIked this place for a long time due to poor customer service and a generally bad attitude by the employees there. It had been a long time since I'd set foot in the place so I thought I'd give it another go and see if anything had changed.
Well, nope.
I walked in and the three sales people were showing people various guns in the case.
Once one of them freed up I had the misfortune of gaining the attention of possibly the worst employee I had ever encountered at The Bullet Trap.
I didn't catch his name but he was tall, slender, wearing a Navy Carrier cap and looked like a meth user with scabbed up arms. I'd not just making things up because of the poor experience...he really looked like a meth head.
When I asked him if I could see the M&P Shield his immediate response really set me back. With a disgusted tone he blurted out "Everyone wants to see this overrated piece of junk! I don't get why everyone wants this junkie gun!"
I thought to myself, really dude?
Anyways, I called him out on it and told him that was just his opinion but to humor me and tell me why he felt that way.
He proceeded to bash the guns sight, trigger, grips and accuracy.
I was done and this point. I gave it back to him and walked though their doors for the last time.

Gunmasters
I walked in and was stared at by the old black man that's been there forever. Almost like he wanted me to know he saw me and I better not try anything because I was being watched. Not once did anyone in the store say hi. I walked around for about ten minutes, looking here and there and not even so much as a "Hi, how ya' doing?"
I then saw their 550 count box of Federal 22LR that they were selling for 69.95. This is the same box you could get at Wal-Mart for about 20.00.
That's when I walked though their doors for the last time too.

Summation
If you're in the Plano area and need a gun store that actually wants your business and is polite and courteous to their customers then Gun Gear To Go is the place you want to be and to spend your money at.
If your goal is to be talked down to or flat out ignored, the check out the other two holes.

You're not missing anything, trust me.
Continue to just give your money to the good guys. I know I will.

Thanks for the insight. At first glance, I would have thought maybe you work for GGTG. but I too have been to all 3 and, with the exception of Meth Head Man, I've had the same experience as you.

From what I have been told at GGtoGo.The owner of the GGtoGo is the same owner of Bullet trap who sold his business to the Frisco Gun Club owner. They have the same so called "membership" discount policy as that of Bullet trap (waste of money, IMHO)

I have been twice at the GGtoGo and I was impressed by customer service and how the store is new and clean. I love the friendly attention given to the customers. You feel appreciated and want to give more of your dollars to that store. If I have to order a hard to find firearm, GGtoGo is my local store of choice. :tiphat:

I've had pleasant experiences at Bullet Trap. It could be I got fantastic deals on 2 of the weapons I got from there ("used", but unfired M&P 40 mid, just found the receipt: $390 out the door & a used, but nearly unfired CMMG AR-15 Carbine, $757 out the door). I also got my 45 Compact from there, but at retail price in 2010.

Although, I did have a similar experience that they were not fans of the Shield. I had 2 different guys there tell me I should look at the SA XDs9 instead.

I am in there about once a month because it's my buddy's favorite place to go. They know him by name. He's probably spent $10k in there.

I am DEFINITELY over their range after having been to Eagle Gun Range. BT's range is like a dungeon.
S&W M&P 40 Mid (EDC) - S&W Shields (his/hers) - S&W M&P .45C - S&W 4513TSW .45 (1st Gen, retired to nightstand)
CMMG AR15 w/ACOG
Anderson AR15 pistol w/Aimpoint H1
