Snide isnt the word I would use for the comment I made, your choice of course
Of course when I buy a gun I show it to the clerk..
But no when I am cashing a check. What were you doing when you got the comment, ??? most clerks at gun stores have seen it 100s of times so it would be nothing new to them . But clerks at 7/11, McDonalds, Stripes probaly never.
I will stick with my comment about wannabes and cow BOYS. I hope that isnt snide . It's just me.

Re: Were you one of the first?
O b , your comment about too many cowboys and what ever in texas kind of sounds like you are saying that anyone who uses their CHL in place of a DL is doing it to show off. If that is what you meant, it really isn't necessarily true. I have used mine by accident before. It looks like my DL. I am certainly no show off. I used it as a second ID when a second was requested.
Anyway... The thread is suppose to be so we can see who helped pioneer the way in CHL's. I said it that way in reference to the cowboy thing...LOL.
The only subject allowed on this thread besides who was first is the high price of bacon.

Chas.
Charles has me beat by a few months. I got mine in 1996 due to the fact that in the beginning it was near impossible to get into a class. Too few instructors and too many wanting to get in.

I know what you mean. Noobs pretending they're experts are annoying to the people who do know the law, but they can be dangerous to those who don't know the law and get bad advice from the wanna be expert.o b juan wrote:Some folks are wannna bes and we have a lot here in Texas.
Back on topic, I didn't get mine the year the law went into effect, but I got mine the first year it was available to me.

I've only had mine for 3+ years, but have been on this forum since I applied. I hear the worst information being spouted (not from those on this forum) from those who claim to have had their CHL for a long time. I think their learning processed stopped after they completed their first course, and frankly I don't know how they made it through all those renewals, and they're not Noobs. At my age, I love to be called a Noob at anything. Makes me feel young againtacticool wrote:I know what you mean. Re: Were you one of the first?
I worked for the Airlines and was in Miami, FL when I read in USA Today that the TX CHL law had finally passed. Though born/raised in TX, I had gone to College and worked in FL from 1982-1992 and the FL CHL and "MPA type" laws really spoiled me. When I got back to TX in 1992, being able to carry only a shotgun/rifle in a vehicle made me feel "naked." I recall getting the small post card at my LGS and mailing it to Austin. After a short wait, getting that large, brown, numbered packet. I was able to get into one of the first CHL classes on 8 OCT 1995. Classroom was taught at a local hotel, then qualification at the LGS range the next day. Also, "old school" Polaroid passport photos, ink finger-prints, tons of forms and Notary stamps, etc. I recall photo-copying the entire stack of documents, then off to the 24-hour Airport Post Office for USPS Money Order and confirmed-receipt mail to Austin... then waiting. I too got my CHL # 6407, late in 1995, but unable to use it until 1 JAN 1996. Due to FL years, I still had cover garments, holsters, belts for both a Beretta 92FS and S&W Centennial 442 and it felt great being able to carry again after a long 4 year gap! I remember the illegal "gun buster" signs at "Blockbuster Video" (yes still back in the VHS days) and taking our business elsewhere. Also, due to the initial AWB of 1994, I remember the "Baby Glocks" etc being introduced and being able to find more and more CHL/carry gear at my LGS and not having to search for LEO type stores. Also the internet had taken off yet, so finding information except via magazine and LGS shop-talk was a challenge. Glad TX finally got on board. God Bless TX!
Re: Were you one of the first?
I was 12 when CHL was 1st allowed. So no I haven't had mine since the start.

o b juan,
Since you were replying to my post, I took the "wanna be" comment to mean I was a "wanna be". If that was not your intent, then no offense taken.
Yes, gun store employees have seen thousands of CHLs. However, a couple have found the repeating zero followed by a number to be unusual. Considering, I know my license has to be one of the earliest issued, I do not understand why it has 8 digits.
My apology to the orginal OP if this seem off topic.

My instructor and License # 00003141. I misplaced the license or someone in the class kept it when I passed it and had to order another about 2 years later.
My Instructor # is still that but my License # is diff.

I had to move to Illinois for work in '94 and was irritated that it happened after I was gone!
We moved back in '98 and got it then.

Re: Were you one of the first?
I've wondered about license numbers. I requested the application packet early, but didn't take the class for years. My license number is in the 5,000,000 range, and I don't think 5,000,000 Texas CHLs have been issued.donniet wrote:Yes, gun store employees have seen thousands of CHLs. Anybody know what the first license number was ? Are they consecutive, or random?

Re: Were you one of the first?
The law went into effect in September, I had mine in hand by my birthday in December. Mine was four years. My wife got hers in March or thereabouts and hers was a two year.

Re: Were you one of the first?
I got a two year, which was a real pain in '98 when I had to renew and everything was still basically paper based. But I did it, Last renew I skipped the class due to the new regs. One thing I look forward to for next time is using the DL picture for CHL. My DL will renew in 2014 and my CHL in 2016.Dragonfighter wrote:The law went into effect in September, I had mine in hand by my birthday in December. Mine was four years. I hate getting mug shots for these things. I have a few other state licenses and I've been working internationally quite a bit and getting work visa and passport photos. What I do is get my company to pay for passport photos that I need for work visas, then I copy them on my color laser and print 32 at a time on high quality photo paper. Then I use them for all my "gun stuff".
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"
