Lockbox for large home defense gun?
We are currently expecting our first child, and I am expecting my plastic. We have therefore been discussing how to balance the safety of curious hands with the security of readily accessible home defense guns. Most of our guns and other valuables reside in a safe, but we have long kept a gun readily accessible and out of plain view in the home. Though I have long favored revolvers for this role due to their reliability, my wife is far more effective with semi-autos, and prefers the larger capacity they offer. Since reading about the potential for temporary deafness and permanent hearing damage from indoor discharges, our home defense gun has been a semi-auto chambered in .45 ACP with an attached suppressor that reduces the report to almost safe levels. Once I receive my CHL, I expect that I will be carrying with some regularity, but due to its location, I doubt that I will go through the trouble of opening the safe twice a day to store my carry gun. Thus, in the evenings, there could be two guns unsecured.
Our current inclination is towards using a small, biometrically activated lockbox to keep our guns handy but secure. We realize this introduces a delay and potential for failure, but hope this will be mitigated by my frequently opening it to store my carry gun. However, we have not found such a lockbox of sufficient size to house the semi-auto with the attached can (overall length of 16”). The ideal solution would be well enough disguised or bolted down that it would protect against a smash and grab, but still quick for us to access. Does anyone know of commercially available solutions or previous DIY projects?
Also, while I am not concerned about the use of a NFA registered “silencer” from a criminal standpoint, does anyone know of any civil cases where its use has proven persuasive?

I've had my eye on one of these for a while now.

My big safe is an AMSEC and I've been very please with it. The only thing keeping me from buying this was the $599 MSRP. However, I'd seen it on Costco's website recently for $459. But just now I noticed that its currently on sale for $399, will probably be ordering one once I finish this post. In any case, I've read several good reviews. Based on my prior experience with AMSEC I'd expect it would serve your purposes very well.

I do not know if there is a version of this http://www.shotlock.com/Details.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
For your semi-auto 45 ACP rifle.
Here they state that there is an AR version in the works. I hope to see one for the AK too.

Similar situation here.. waiting on plastic and getting ready.
Have 2 of these on the way for the wife and I, keeps her out of accessing the large safe everyday.
They can be used with pretty much any weapon that I can tell. (shotgun, AR, pistol)

I just ordered one of these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31ls0G2-voL.jpg. It's designed to go under the bed. It's long enough for a rifle/shotgun but can also be used to store multiple handguns.
