Bestselling author and gun owner says 'autos and semi-autos are weapons of mass destruction' in 25-page work for Kindle

Stephen King has entranced millions with tales of dread but his latest volume will read like a horror only to the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights advocates. The best-selling author made an unexpected charge into the national debate on gun violence on Friday with a passionate, angry essay pleading for reform.

King, who owns three handguns, aimed the expletive-peppered polemic at fellow gun-owners, calling on them to support a ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons in the wake of the December shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school which left 20 children and six adults dead.

"Autos and semi-autos are weapons of mass destruction. When lunatics want to make war on the unarmed and unprepared, these are the weapons they use," King wrote.

He said blanket opposition to gun control was less about defending the second amendment of the US constitution than "a stubborn desire to hold onto what they have, and to heck with the collateral damage". He added: "If that's the case, let me suggest that '[expletive] you, Jack, I'm okay' is not a tenable position, morally speaking."

King is a brilliant writer. He is also an idiot. One more fool I am so done with.....

Is he really this dumb? That he makes our argument for us in his own polemic?

most movies, books music is now available for free for those inclined to seek it out in the torrent and newsgroup sites. I know of people who use those sources rather than pay money to people with adverse political leanings, yet supoort those creative types who are more rational by buying their product.

Funny how the media hasn't chosen to highlight David Mamet's article on gun control....in spite of his greater literary acclaim (which by "intellectual" standards places him as a more "literary" and hence, better writer than King). Talent isn't part of the criteria if you're saying what the media doesn't want people to hear.

I used to read his stuff and watchhis movies before I knew better.

His opinion matters not. He is a small speck in the universe and those that he influences have little capacity to reason.

Funny he would say any of that. I remember reading "Rage" as a freshman in high school. It was in a four part book under his pseudonym Richard Bachman. I wonder who among the school shooters were directly influenced by that book.

I enjoy King's books; his writing style makes you feel you are "in" the story. But you gotta know, from some of the stuff he dreams up, that he is a little wacko.. I mean, come on, some of that stuff has to be artifically induced..
