Re: Motorcycle Accident
Two kinds of motorcycle riders... Those that have been down and those that will go down. Sounds like a bunch of us are all in group #1. Glad you are okay.

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Been there, done that.
I dont remember what happened to me, and there were no witnesses. I only remembering waking up in the hospital. The last memory I have of the night is about a 10 minute ride from where I actually wrecked.
The ER doc came up to check on me the next morning and these were his exact words, "For a lack of better medical terms, you're still alive because your shoulders are so wide and your neck is so short. Your head couldnt hit the ground the way it was supposed to.

Ouch. Good reason to keep a lid on it.bci21984 wrote:Been there, done that.

Glad you are okay. I'll reiterate what others have said: Get the thumb checked out sooner rather than later. I never got my shoulder looked at after I went down years ago and, while fine the overwhelming majority of the time, it gives me trouble periodically. Better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Interesting. I just picked up some nice leather chaps and a jacket today for a good price (and by good price, I mean I was under a 4-digit price tag )

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Well, I saw my doc today and it's broken. It should heal ok, but he wants me to see a hand surgeon for a second opinion. Looks like I'm gonna have to get some left hand practice for sure now.

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Where is the break? Is it a gamekeeper fracture? I broke mine and am really glad I had it fixed surgically.

There is a third type. Those have have been down and will go down again.thatguy wrote:As they say there are the riders who have been down and those that will go down...get you thumb checked out ASAP and thank God it wasn't worse.
Glad you are not hurt worse. I have been down a couple of times in 40+ years of riding so I know how you feel. Its especially bad on bridges here right now because of the sand that was put down last week for the ice

Re: Motorcycle Accident
I'm not sure what that is. The break is right after the main joint. The bones are a little bit displaced so my doc wants me to see the specialist.Lonest4r wrote:Where is the break? Is it a gamekeeper fracture? I broke mine and am really glad I had it fixed surgically.

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Glad you are mostly ok. Let us know what the specialist says. Believe me, now is the time for action. I hope all goes well for you!
Back in 1993, I was bicycling in a breakdown lane when a large semi pulled a right turn directly in front of me. To avoid hitting the truck head-on, I laid my bicycle down and slid about 20' into the bar-ditch on my right shoulder. I didn't see a doctor and as a result have continuing problems. I have to go and beg for a steroid shot every 2-3 years. After my last shot in 2012, the doctor said, "No more shots. If it flares up again, we need to do surgery, with a minimum recovery period of six to nine months." [Since I don't want to have to shoot left handed for almost a year, I plan on toughing it out if I can.......]

got my cast today. specialist says I should have it off in 3 to 4 weeks and a brace for a few weeks afterward. Also got a little bit of left handed shooting in this afternoon. I think i'm gonna need a little more practice though.

Re: Motorcycle Accident
Left hand shooting is no problem, its the right hand shooting that is tough.. actually in the military I 'had' to learn to shoot right handed, then I was allowed to shoot left handed. It was my DI's opinion that every one should learn to shoot right handed, and the brass is less of an issue with right handed shooting.
As a consequence I can shoot about as well with either hand.. I do prefer left handed but it is a close thing.

What was it Launchpad McQuack used to say? "Any wreck you can walk away from is a good one." Something like that...
