He is in the "we will wait for SWAT to arrive, we do not want any of our police entering the school building out gunned, if we can avoid it"

"Even if teachers were trained, they may not be prepared to come face to face with a school intruder who is armed with an assault weapon, said the chief.

"I would not want any of my trained police officers to go up against someone with an assault rifle with a handgun if they could avoid it, because you're outmatched," said McClelland."

I feel so much better now, after hearing this from my Police Chief.

OK, arm them with AR's or AK's. Case closed. :thumbs2:

Sooooo....they are better of going up against an intruder's weapon with nothing than with a handgun?

Isn't it lovely that someone would rather force their SWAT officers to "secure" a bunch of dead children instead of at least allowing a teacher to have a CHANCE to stop someone bent on murdering those children? I'm not sure if its pure politics on the Police Chief's part, or they have lost the American spirit of resistance to evil, or what...but people with that terrible attitude sicken me. They seem to want others to simply cower in fear and await death. Yes, I know, I apologize 10K times over if I sound like a tough-guy, I'm not, I'm just a mechanic...I understand that I will not know what might happen until I am put in such a life and death situation, but I still want the means to TRY if I am able, and the teachers should too. I guess that is too much to ask from some people.

TOOL!

He needs to be the first one to go quietly away. Anyone with children in HISD should be appalled at this mindless moron pinned to a badge.

I agree. I would gladly, at least, try to distract the bad guy so he's focused on me rather than the children. I would gladly take a bullet intended for a child. For a cop he's sure a coward.

It seems that for the most part police now put their own safety above the safety of all others. It a deep farce of what it used to mean to serve and protect.

As I have said many times, armed teachers are not first-responders; they are the last hope of survival for the children. I fear Chief McClelland has shown himself to be far more concerned with politics than protecting the public as is his sworn duty. Thanks Mayor Parker, what a great selection you made for the citizens of Houston.

I'll never understand this "better dead than armed" philosophy.

Has someone suggested that the teachers have/carry assault weapons?

That sounds a lot like what the officer who came out in response to a robbery at our house told us. His advise was to not spend money on an alarm system as the police response time would be such to ensure that no confrontation with the suspect would occur. His job was to fill out the report and take down the serial numbers of whatever was taken so that insurance could handle the losses. He told us to just put out a fake sign and get a big dog. The sign and dog would deter most opportunists and anyone that ignored the dog was someone that shouldn't be engaged. :grumble

So now we have 3 dogs.... And the FedEx guy hardly ever makes it to the door before retreating (depends on the size of the box if he'll toss it to the door or just file a no-one-home missed delivery report.

Not only does he sound like he's from the "duty to retreat" crowd, but he also doesn't want his SWAT team to get their hands dirty. Granted, I may have his context screwed up.

I can't agree more, Andy. I've known both types personally, related to a good one (retired after 30+ years of service) who was my encouragement to get my CHL and carry. Growing up, we had a good sheriff, 1 really good cop (force only had 4 total, 2 were....not great) and a couple of good DPS guys (one was my scout master).

You just never know which type will arrive in a place the size of Houston which is kinda sad.
