Second attempt to see what is the suggested Ammo without having to go through trial and error. Any help would be appreciated since I am picking mine up tommorrow.

I dont have this (or any other .45) however knowing how Springfields (XDm9 and XD9) eat ammo, probably any .45 caliber ammo you buy would work just fine.

Your primary consideration is barrel length, as your XDs will eat any bullet design you care to try. Your XDs barrel is 3.3" which is actually a tad longer than the the barrel on a 3" 1911. Probably any load, either in standard or +P charges, with a 185 to 200 grain bullet would be plenty sufficient. Actually, I carried 230 grain HST in my 3" Kimber, and I now carry 230 grain HST in both my 3.5" barrled Kahr CW45 and my 3.8" barreled XDm-45.....because that's what I have on hand. Eventually, I'll burn that ammo up and replace it with a 185 grain +P load. But even so, I don't feel particularly under-armed with a 230 grain load at a slightly lower velocity in a short barreled gun, and nobody has volunteered to let me shoot them to prove to me how ineffective that choice is.

I have been using the Gold Dot Short Barrel and the Hornady 185, both are supposed to have a reduced flash to keep from blinding you at night was my logic. The 185 grain weight for higher velocity and better expansion from the short bbl.

The 185 grain weight for higher velocity and better expansion from the short bbl.
Or 230gr for better penetration.
The 45ACP Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo is 230gr only, but the regular Gold Dot is available in 185gr, 200gr and 230gr.

I'm in the process of choosing a 45ACP SD load for a 1911 Officer's model - sufficient velocity for reliable expansion out of a short barrel is my main concern. (Feed reliability hasn't been an issue for anything from 185gr to 230gr, LSWC, LHP, JHP handloads and factory).

For FMJ, my guess is any brand would work. Hollow point is probably the one you have to trial and error. There is a XDS sub forum on XD talk, you might check over there and see what the other owners are using.

Thank you all for the continued help. Pick up 230 grain FMJ ammo to break it in, but the trip was delayed at least a week.

Still trying to figure out the best way to carry it before I spend money on a holster. Not really an IWB person, so my options get fairly limited.

This question is somewhat related to the topic at hand. Has anyone that owns a XDS and also loaded it with defense rounds, specifically Golden Sabers, had difficulty in ejecting live ammo from the chamber? I've only noticed this problem with the Golden Sabers but every time I try and clear the chamber of a live round I have a heck of a time getting the round out of the chamber. The round keeps getting caught up as it's being ejected. I tried unloading my gun with Hydra Shock, white box target rounds and I don't have this problem, it only seems to happen with the Golden Sabers.

Obviously it's because of the aggressive nature of the round, but I don't want to screw up my gun in the process of clearing the chamber and most importantly, it's just not a safe situation in general. Looks like I'll be switching to a new defensive round but I wanted to see if anyone else is having the same issues.

Thanks!

Don't have an XDs -- yet -- but I carry Hornady Critical Defense standard pressure rounds in both my 4-inch Springer Loaded (my nightstand gun) and in my 3-inch Kimber UCII (a cool-weather carry choice) ... never had a feed problem with either gun ... I also carry it in my regular EDC Kahr PM9 and in my dogwalk choice, an NAA Pug .22mag ... great round IMHO ...

Happy to report that the XDS will shoot dang near every type of ammo. I am certain that there is an issue somewhere. Between Hornaday, Lawman, and Winchester, the only common issue I found was me. As a sidebar, this shot as well as my fullsize MP 9MM and by friends Glock 9MM. Impressive gun to say the least....

I can't make mine hiccup no matter what I feed it. I use whatever 230gr ball is cheapest for range ammo, and carry Remington Golden Saber 230gr JHP. NOTE: muzzle flash with Federal HydraShok is VICIOUS, we're talking some serious fire! (Shoots 'em just fine, though).

I have a 1911, not an XDS, but I am very happy with the 230 grain Gold Dots. If I ever get the STI Shadow I have my sights on, I'll have to check out the short barrel Gold Dot ammo. I hadn't heard of that before.
