"I think that being able to legally obtain and carry a gun is the best thing any Sikh can do, especially after 9/11 where there have been over 800 documented cases of harassment and violence against us,"
This article is so good it really deserves its own thread IMHO

Bloomberg wants to infringe upon one of the tenets their religion
The Sikh religion requires males to carry a dagger -- known as a "Kirpan" -- for the protection of themselves and others, at all times.

"Our prophet said we should protect ourselves, and protect those who cannot defend themselves. He made sure that every [Sikh man] should carry a weapon," Rajwinder Singh said.

The word "tenet" is defined in the dictionary as:

A principle, doctrine, or belief held as a truth, as by some group
An opinion, doctrine, or principle held as being true by a person or especially by an organization
I'm no lawyer

"Never show your hole card" "Always have something in reserve"

dashcam video from this incident has been released.
publisher's main site, jsonline.com
current working link to the story

from the article:
Wearing black camouflage pants and a white shirt, Page stepped out the temple door and appeared headed to his truck when the two men spotted each other, raised their guns and fired.

After he was shot in the neck, Murphy pointed his gun in the direction Page had been running. Instead, Page circled back and came up from behind Murphy and opened fire.

<snip for brevity>

Page popped the magazine back into the 9mm, raised his gun and started walking again toward the officer. Lenda ordered Page to drop his gun. Page began firing, one of the bullets going through the squad windshield.

Lenda fired six rounds from his rifle. The second or third shot hit Page in the abdomen from more than half a football field away.
much respect to the responding officers. :tiphat:

from the small data provided, it appears that Page was either a formidable opponent or particularly lucky (his own demise excepted). he used suppression , decisive action, and mobility to gain positional advantage on the first responding officer, and was able to disable him. then, from a ~50yd distance, while moving, with a handgun he managed to get effective fire on the 2nd responding officer. thankfully the 2nd responder had a good shot of his own to counter.

EDIT: I likely over-quoted the source article. just to be on the safe side, I pared the quote down.

Resurrecting the thread with an update.

Posted on Greg Ellefritz's Blog:
A couple weeks ago I attended an excellent lecture from retired police Lieutenant Brian Murphy. Lt. Murphy was the first officer on the scene of the Sikh temple active killer massacre in Wisconsin back in 2012. Lt. Murphy was shot FIFTEEN TIMES in the incident. He survived and created a lecture to share the lessons he learned during the challenging event.

It was reported at the time that he had ties to white supremacist groups and had been given either a general discharge or an other than honorable discharge from the US Army for patterns of misconduct including AWOL and drunkenness. I believe there was also an off-base criminal charge as well.
