And depending on your attitude towards his attitude towards you carrying, when you ask for permission you could point out that he carries and keeps his gun in his desk and that you, being licensed, would like the same permission to carry. Since you have already been told no all they can do is say, no, again. They may not have given him permission, but that doesn't mean they will also give your permission.

"Hey, bossboss, boss is always talking about how he carries guns to work and keeps a Glock in his desk. If I have a concealed carry permit, I assume it's OK for me to do this as well as long as nobody ever sees it and it remains concealed. I'm looking out for the safety of all of us! Thanks, bossboss."

See how that goes.

You could get permission.
You could get refused and see your boss lose permission.
You could get refused and see your boss lose permissions and subsequently have it out for you.
You could get refused and see your boss get fired.
You could get fired.
You could get fired and see your boss get fired.
You could see your boss get fired and see yourself in the the boss' chair, with or without permission for your own case.
I'm wondering about the boss, keeping in a drawer rather than on body carry; whether boss has a CHL or is carrying under the Sec. 46.02. "(1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control

I hope (if what I'm thinkin') non-CHL boss doesn't "go postal" if he loses his permission (whether you get it or not)

But in talking to boss's boss ... if Boss has no license ... Hey, he has no License but I do, so ...

Nothing positive could possibly come from pushing this issue, especially if you go around your boss to his superiors. At best, you will ensure that you never get a positive review or any possible promotion in the future. It sounds like you have plenty of other employment options, since you don't care about getting fired. If this is really important to you, then my advice would be to seek out another employer, make sure they do not have effective 30.06 notice, and then don't tell another living soul that you are carrying concealed at your new job.

Oh and also make sure that you thank your current boss for all of the great wisdom and guidance he has given you, etc. There is no point burning bridges.

Unless is a matter of harassment or theft, we have a policy of only giving employees once chance to go above their direct boss. Twice and your fired. Once an employee knows they can go around their boss, they will continue to....forever.

Also, I am in no way encouraging you to break any laws or policies, but keep in mind that oral notice is about as good as the paper it is written on.

Thanks for all the great responses.

What pisses me off about the whole thing is that this guy (my boss) is a CHL instructor and then tells me I cant carry...what the heck?

Also, I didn't advertise anything about having my CHL. He asked all of us when we were in his office a few days ago, prior to this time all we ever really talk about is guns, weapons, etc. He specifically said that his gun in his desk was the only one needed...like he has to be the hero or something.

As a pilot, I am aware that there are many restrictions with carrying on the aircraft so obviously I leave it locked in the car on flights. But when I come to the office, the last thing I want to do is have to disarm myself when my boss is carrying. This a relatively new job for me, so this guy has been showing his true colors since about the week after we started with the company...looking like your typical control freak with a Marine Corp mentality. (nothing against Marines, I was prior service AF)

I think whenever he starts to notice that I don't come by the office at all unless I am flying he may ask why I stopped, I will tell him that its not worth disarming for.

I have had flying jobs that the company handbook says no firearms period but the owner of the company specifically told all of us that if we have our CHL, we can bring it anywhere the law allows us.

Maybe by the boss telling you that you cant carry is a matter of covering himself. Think about it. Regarding his best interests, what's the up side, and what's the downside of his giving you permission? What if there was a ND at work? The company could be held liable. He could be fired.

Seems he is willing to assume the risks involved by his carrying at work; just not yours. What do you think he would do if he discovered you were carrying? Maybe him telling you that he has a weapon is a hint. If I were the manager in this situation I too would tell you not to carry; but I would try not to look too close.

If you can justify carrying at work, and willing to assume the consequences, carry.

SHHHH...Concealed is concealed. ;-)

Sure is. Folks know who their boss is and the managers know who they are managing. Those above the managers are paid to manage the managers, not every single employee in the building.

To the OP, best of luck and if there is an option not to be in the office I would take that every time!

There are certain things that should never be discussed at work.

Concealed carry is one of these things.

Keep your mouth shut.

Do what you have to do to survive.

Accept the fact that actions have consequences.

I have been employed by the same company (A Fortune 250 company) for almost 34 years. We have a "firearms enthusiast" clique that lots of people know about. Outside of work I have shot with certain individuals, fellow employees, whom I trust with my life. One was my shift supervisor when I started and the other was an operator in the same unit I started in, now a pipeline technician. We never have discussed carry at work.

A fellow middle manager in the office next door carries the same handgun I do, and we pretty much mirror each other's outlook on lots of topics. We are well aware of the rules.

When he has an issue with one of his reports he tells me and I tell him. We cut an operator loose recently. A knowing look in each others eyes said all that needed to be said. No words were exchanged. The HR manager actually warned us to be aware of our outside activities in the event this individual decided to respond to our cutting him loose. We both kind of snorked at the suggestion.

As a rule you can trust very few and that trust is earned.

Like I said, keep your private life and doings private.

For all of the ills (perceived or otherwise) of a large corporation, this is one case where I'm glad I work for one. We can place an anonymous phone call to our hotline or contact our ombudsman without fear of retaliation.

Maybe the boss has no authority and he is sneaking his in, has no power to grant permissions or just scared of a employee uprising. Remeber in Texas you can be fired for no reason.

The only correct answer to that question is, "No, I don't have one." Then you avoid the whole problem. He sounds like a sneaky ba... uh....jerk to me.

I wonder what motivated him to do that in the first place. Obviously, if he gathered all of you together before popping the question, it was planned. And what kind of CHL instructor would do that to CHL holders? Maybe he's not really a CHL instructor, and he's just some kind of blowhard. Already I don't like the guy, and I've never met him.

Let's look at a bright side in this discussion...

If anything goes down at work, at least you know whose desk you can run to, to put your hands on a Glock!! :-)

SIA
