And fox news says nothing about a holster. So ask yourself IF the gun was holstered HOW did his finger touched the trigger when he was reaching for his wallet. The bullet grazed his leg and then hit the floor. Sounds like he had it in his pocket and if it was in a holster; what kind allows easy trigger access like that?
I'm not buying the holster rumor. This sounds like a mexican carry incident to me. It could easily have been caused by shirt material wadded up in the trigger guard that put pressure on the trigger when he reached for his wallet.

He should lose it anyway. Convicted or not. Negligent discharge in public should be automatic.

What would you have done had you been there and heard that shot?

Maybe it was a small .380 that has a "fitted" wallet-style holster that has a hole for the trigger.

Regardless -- a big OOPS that will be costly - in more ways than $$$

If he would have just stayed and owed up it would to it he would have been OK but to run and act like it never happened is a street mentality

My CHL course instructor(initials D.H.) taught my class in Feb. 2012 that one should not bother carrying a gun for protection if you put the safety on. His reasoning was you might not have time or remember to take it off safety in the heat of the moment. And of course he said to always keep a round in the chamber for the same reason. He said his gun I believe he said a 45 S&W had 5 safeties and would never accidentally discharge.

I strongly disagree with him and this guy that had the accident may have attended one of this instructors classes since he teaches in the DFW area..

WHY did he run? It would have been SOOOO much better for him if he had just stayed around. Seriously. Idiot.

1: I think your line of reasoning and your instructor are both flawed... :biggrinjester:

2: The gun in the article, assuming it is the gun involved has no safety to be individually, manually operated,, That talking head was wrong... as is anyone who makes a point based on this..."Lack of putting on the safety"

Using a gun with a manually manipulated safety not part of trigger or grip action is not inherently more or less safe,, either takes practice to be proficient.

Wither I carry a Colt 1911 with both a grip safety and a manually operated separate safety, or my XD with all integral safeties, or something else... they are all very safe, both very quick to deploy, and I will never "forget" to operate the manual safety if so equipped, because I practice...

I don’t forget to blow my nose, tie my shoes, or a million other things either, as I have much practice in doing them.

If a user is unwilling to practice with the gun they choose to carry, please choose not to carry and allow the police to respond and take the report for later investigation.

I disagree with you. Why carry if the gun is not ready to fire? Are you going to tell your robber, sorry sir you will have to wait while I put a round in the chamber and then flip the safety off. A good holster and training will keep things like discharges from happening.

So any current news on what they will do with this feller?

As anyone who has ever carried a 1911 cocked and locked over a loaded chamber can tell you, the act of taking off the thumb safety while drawing the gun is absolutely no impediment to the speed of the presentation, and it's hard to argue with an accurate .45 with a great single action trigger.

The ONLY downside, if there is one, is that it requires that you practice with the gun you carry........but then, that's as true for a Glock/Kahr/M&P/XD as it is for a 1911. The above mentioned instructor is an idiot. You carry what you are good with. If that's a 1911 or other single action pistol with a safety, that's NOT a negative. Rather, it is a matter of preference. The above mentioned instructor was preaching his personal preference as CHL gospel. On the other hand, no less an accomplished shooter with many real world gunfights under his belt as the late Col. Jeff Cooper would not only disagree, but disagree strongly. How many gunfights has that CHL instructor been in?

I'm not saying one way is better than the other. I am saying that it doesn't matter whether you're carrying a 1911 or a Glock or a 2" snubbie.....you'd better know what you're doing with it.

Looks scary - like an accident waiting to happen. Let's see....thread my middle finger through the round hole while I try to get my trigger finger in the right place, and have an awkward grip anyway. Might make a second shot difficult....
