Teens kill with one punch

Three teenagers accused of killing a 62-year-old father-of-12 in West Rogers Park were playing a game called “Pick ‘em out and knock ‘em down” when they videotaped themselves punching him in the face, prosecutors say.
This "game" is becoming very popular among teenagers. It needs to stop.

I don't know what to say... I would be angry if they got anything less than first degree murder.

This is a similar "game" that aired on Saturday Night Live. Maybe this is where they got the idea from.

There was another topic about this (though different incidents) because I remember talking about seeing this in England many years ago. They called it "happy slapping", something for drunk "lads" to do while out at the pubs/clubs...haven't heard about this actually happening here in Texas, though.

I think SNL's skit was copying what is going on in ghetto culture, not the other way around.

This has been a trend for a while, and it is not the first person to die.

I hope they pick me! I will be the one posting the video on the Internet. Punks like that always pick folks who look frail or incapable of defending themselves. I may get a cane, just to trick a thug into thinking I am a soft target. :mad5

That crap just enrages me!!!

A well publicized instance of target selection error would quite likely go a long ways toward helping thugs understand that the downside isn't always on the part of the intended victim.

I agree, but I'm not volunteering.

Since we often think tactically here, I've been giving some thought to this. One thing I think would be wise is to maintain a safe distance (more than arm's reach) from any stranger who approaches you asking for money. A second one is that old bugaboo about awareness. Always scan your surroundings and take note of groups of people that seem to be working in concert. When someone suddenly makes a beeline toward you, quickly take note of where his buddies are before facing him and preparing for a confrontation.

And of course I would value your thoughts on this as well.

Most likely the situation would be of you walking by a group of teens who look to be minding their own business. Then one of them will rare back and sucker punch you. The trick is to look each and every one of them dead in the eye and say. Hello gentlemen. Then watch for any movements that indicate a punch is coming. I think the correct answer is to maintain space but I am a little more aggressive than that. :evil2:

They are seldom man enough to confront you head on. Typically what happens is, one of them talks to you, threatens you, does whatever to get your attention while another of their group comes at you from the side to sucker punch you. Don't let them surround you. Stay very aware of where all of them are located.

Eventually, this behavior will come to a head. Someone is gonna defend themselves and it wont be pretty.
Then we will hear from the "victims" family about how their baby was an angel and all that good stuff.

I agree that preemptive communication during the target evaluation phase of an encounter can take you out of the "good victim" category and convince them to keep looking for a better one. It's subtle but it works, and I know that because I've used it.
