A few disjointed thoughts on some of the things mentioned already:

1) I'm not sure someone armed would have been able to do much. If he really did have a CS grenade, anyone who's ever experienced tear gas will tell you its hard to do much of anything when its attacking you.

2) They said that the AZ shooter was a tea party member too. The name thing might be coincidence, we will have to wait and see. At this point its all media speculation.

3) Some things to remember if you engage anyone about why this shouldn't lead to more gun control: The Netherlands have had very strict gun control for over 100 years....that didn't stop Brekevik(sp?) from murdering dozens. Violent crime went up in both England and Australia as more gun control laws were passed. If someone is honestly interested in reducing violent crime, evidence and history shows that gun control has the exact opposite effect.
The shooting and bombing that Breivik perpetrated was in Norway. I am not sure how long their gun controls have been in place.

The Marshal wrote:AW, concerning Body Armor:

Remember the CHL holder that bravely attempted to stop the Active Shooter at the courthouse in Tyler.
He did drop the guy with his 1-2 shots to the chest with his .45
What he did not do is make sure the Shooter was down for good, because the Shooter was wearing body armor.
And the Shooter did get back up and killed the CHL holder.
And for those that don't know, the slain CHL holder is credited with stopping the attack and saving lives.
Just a reminder that should you get in said situation, do not make assumptions.
The Tyler shooter was wearing both a Kevlar vest and a flack jacket. The flack jacket wouldn't stop incoming rounds, but so much energy was used penetrating it that the felt impact on the Kevlar vest was much reduced. That's a much different scenario than having a Kevlar vest alone.

Editor's Note: An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

The actor, the active shooter, is a "Joker" wannabe. Case closed.

Wife and I went to the movies last night (not Batman). As we waited for the movie to start I pointed out to her that there was only one exit in the front of the theater, it was on the left side, and that the exit light seemed to be out. She gave me the stink eye. You know the one... The "you're way too worried about nothing" look.

Needless to say that she feels differently this morning.

Prayers for all the victims. Safe wishes for the LE folks trying to dismantle the booby traps this morning.

Truly tragic.

Originally reported as a med student, now they're saying he is a PhD candidate in the neuroscience program. If so, that's crazy because I have a good friend who's a neuroscience PhD candidate....I'll have to ask her if she knew him.

I don't think handguns like the FiveseveN are carried regularly by folks with much regularity (remember reading about two, or three folks on here that have done so in the past), but that platform would certainly hold it's advantages in a situation like this.
The 5.7 ammo that is designed to penetrate body armor is restricted and not sold to civilians.
Indeed. Though my knowledge of the cartridge is limited, I wonder if perhaps there might be other loads that could be effective against armor. I'm also curious if a fast moving projectile like this would have a greater intrinsic effectiveness on some types of body armor (with non AP rounds) compared to a standard pistol cartridge.
They're only restricted by FN's policies. You can buy as much as you want from Elite Ammo.

One thing I have not seen or heard anywhere is the term "assault rifle". I would think that if he had used an AK-47 or AR-15, the media and all the usual suspects would be jumping all over for an "assault rifle" ban. No mention of high capacity magazines either. Strange.

I think that maybe the ABCNews early slight against the Tea Party that got thrown back in their faces may have chilled them for a little bit. Make no mistake, they'll be out in force, with all the usual calls, as soon as they get their ducks lined up. I'll be a lot more surprised if they DON'T pull their usual stunts. Of course, once again, the shooting happened in a "gun-free zone".

Something that I haven't seen in the thread, relating to if a CHL could do anything under those conditions:

Luby's. Remember part of the reason we have CHL in Texas to begin with; an active shooter calmly choosing victims while people who could have stopped him watched, and died, in terror.

Despite the small probabilities involved, there is always the chance that the miscreant would be close to, or even aiming at, a CHL holder. If it was me, I might not try a shot in a darkened theater across several rows and columns of seats, despite my bright flashlight and laser sight, but if I was in that row or a row or two away and close enough to be a target, then he would be close enough to be a target too.

It is supposed to run during either the 4:00 - 4:30 or 5:00 - 5:30 slots, perhaps both.
