Galveston County Sheriff's race 2008

Lt. Henry Poretto, currently with the Galveston Police Department, announced his candidacy for Galveston County Sheriff last week. The incumbent Sheriff, Gean Leonard, is retiring at the end of his term in 2008.

Lt. Poretto is firmly in favor of the RKBA and promotion of the shooting sports. He is the president of the Galveston Rifle and Pistol Club.

(RKBA and "gun control" have not been issues in Galveston County politics.)

I don't see a good place to post this information, but quite a few active members live in Galveston County and might like to know.

I know Henry well. He's a good guy and would get my vote.

It didn't take long for the other shoe to drop: Capt. Henry Trochesset, patrol commander of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, announced he will run for sheriff as a Democrat. He is endorsed by former Sheriff Joe Max Taylor.

It's now open news that Lt. Porretto will be running as a Republican.

J.L. Campbell Jr. chief of the Fort Bend Independent School District police, ran for that spot in 2004. He has not confirmed or denied that he will run next year.

This should be interesting. Democrats "owned" Galveston County for more than a century. Republicans started to win county-wide races in 2000 (IIRC).

New member "ChrisStevens" would be a good source of information on this race as well, he could put a good perspective on this as soon as he gets back from a trip he had to take last week...

Yep...I know him personally...He's a good troop!

I gave him the vector to visit and become a participant in this forum...He's eager to learn and refine his firearm needs and techniques...

Its is very early to be announcing for 2008 campaigns. Good chance that the Dems will bloody each other up in the primarys for this one.

I agree that it is unusually early. These announcements were triggered by Sheriff Leonard announcing that we will retire. He also has not designated a successor. Galveston County Sheriffs have designated their successors for a long time -- I don't know how long.

J.L. Campbell of Santa Fe, Texas, announced that he will run for sheriff on the Republican ticket. He ran in 2004 and received about 48% of the votes.
