Gun in Luggage

I'm sorry, but I know where every gun I own is. Now, granted I only have 8 and 5 of those are rifles, but I still don't understand how one can forget where their handguns are. Especially if they are going to fly and I gotta go with g21357 on this one. What was it doing in there in the first place?

You guys are too funny! Okay, since that post I have added two rifles. I got my daughter an M&P 15-22 that I plan on giving her tomorrow or Saturday. And I bought my first AR, that Colt LE6920MP-R I asked about in another thread, about two hours ago. They were asking $1350 for it, but I got it for $1250. So, I'm up to 10 now, but I still know where they all are.

I recently carried 5 rounds of .38 Special ammo through two security checkpoints.

I have a nice carry on bag that my girlfriend gave me which I use on trips. She and I took a weekend trip to San Antonio. She was driving, so I put my J farme in the side pocket inside the bag. When we got back from the trip, I spent the night at her place, and her young son was there with us. I unloaded the gun, left the rounds in the bag and put the gun in my car.

The rounds stayed in that bag for 3 months until my trip to Vegas. The J frame isn't in my normal carry rotation, but I like taking it on car trips for whatever reason. The side pocket is hardly ever used, and the rounds were not noticed by me when I packed.

I made it through security in Houston (IAH) without incident. At the Vegas airport, the TSA agents pulled my bag off the scanner and asked if it was mine. I actually thought that they were investigating the cash that I had in the bag (imagine that, leaving Vegas WITH cash for once). They ran it through the scanner again, and then called a supervisor. I was getting a bit irritated that they would ask about cash in my bag on a domestic flight as I had experienced a few run ins of this type before.

The supervisor then said something that made my blood run cold - "Sir, do you own a gun?" Thoughts of the San Antonio trip raced through my mind, including the memory of me placing my revolver in the bag. I responded affirmatively, and then she said that there looked to be 3 or 4 "bullets" in the bag. I instantly flashed back to unloading the revolver and then to placing it back in my safe at home. Relief rushed through my body at the fact that at least I hadn't packed the actual gun. I told her that there were probably 5 rounds from my revolver that I had forgotten. She hand searched the luggage, confiscated the rounds and let me go on my way.

Don't be surprised if you receive notice of a sizable fine in the mail. That seems to be the way TSA is handling these kinds of incidents.

I don't think this is all that likely since they never took my name or contact info and this occurred about 6 months ago.

Unless the guy at the podium memorized my name from my boarding pass, I should be OK.

About a year ago I had used a soft bag when we had visited our hunting lease to do some work. A box of .410 shells had broken loose and I had thought that I had removed all the shells, actually turned the bag over shook it several times to be sure. As bad luck would have it I missed one that had somehow made it into a mesh pocket in the end of the bag and as I was going through security, computer bag already in the x-ray machine saw the errant round in a fold in the end as I was putting it into the x-ray machine. Crud, I pulled the bag off the rollers and told the screener at the checkpoint that I had a problem and was not sure how to handle it, after I explained to him what it was - he of course called over a supervisor who said that it was still my problem since it had not gone through the machine, he then went around grabbed my computer bag, and said since it was not his problem to go back outside to my vehicle and take care of it. I had heard the stories where once you are in line that you have to finish the screening process all the way through and was suprised when he escorted me out of line to take care of "my problem". Thank you to TSA for understanding. Now I never use the same bags to hunt with as I do flying since then.

My mother in law (a real B@#$#) works for TSA (the perfect job for her). She got a big award for finding a handgun in carry on. They all acted as if she did some great work. In my opinion, it was just her job to begin with. If she hadn't found it, she should be fired...
Anyway, back to story.. We had a lovely Holiday meal last year as I explained that "everyone makes mistakes" (even you guys on here that think you are perfect). I understand it was illegal to carry on.. But sometimes punishment should be about the intent. Poor old guy lost his gun and went to jail. Is prosecuting him really worth our tax dollars? Losing gun and CHL is enough. Send him home.
I carry every day but have to leave in gym bag in car when I am at work or working out after work. It's there every day. I have to consciously remember to leave it at home when I drop car off for service. I always worry about forgetting. A little different scenario.. but no one is perfect.

Thank god this year I go to my parents for the holidays!
