Has anyone heard of / used "CHL Protection Plan " ( http://www.chlpp.com )?

Sounds like a good idea...

you know, I saw a little pamphlet at a range that I frequent.
sounds pretty cool, but my thought is, if the Castle Doctrine passes, it might make it kind of redundant (to a point, I meant).
if the offending party is negated in their ability to frivilously sue, then a severe portion of the need has been nullified.
there are plenty of other scenarios that this type of protection might help, but I'm certainly not going to jump all over something that will potentially take some of my miniscule apropriation for shooting, ammo, and MORE GUNS!!!!

CHLPP will only cover you up to the grand jury. If you are indicted, then you are on your own. If you are sued in civil court, again, you are on your own.

Frankly...don't think the CHL insurance touted is of value.

I do and am looking for a good DFW lawyer who may be concealed carry as well. Appreicate suggestions.

All told, we have to pass the Castle Doctrine as proposed and currently law in several states.

I signed up for the CHLPP for some peace of mind. If, by some chance, I get involved in situation where I have to use my gun, I figure that I would, at minimum, be detained and questioned. CHLPP provides an attorney for such circumstances or even if you are arrested. You could be charged, but not indicted by a grand jury. It would be nice to have the services of an attorney. True, they don't provide coverage if you are indicted - their posiition is that they provide coverage for legal use of your CHL, if indicted, they reason, the use was not legal.

the reason I am considering it is because they provide 24hr service so if I get into a shooting at 2am I won't be stuck waiting for a lawyer til 9am before answering any questions.

It is easier to get an airport security clearance than a CHL

While it does only cover you up to the grand jury, if it has gone passed that stage there might be little anyone can do for you beyond that. ;-)

I signed up because they have a network of lawyers around the country. If you travel, then you have a source in other states. Having a local lawyer may work for TX, but what would you do in CO or AZ if their is an issue.
Just my thoughts. At least I would have somebody to call at 2am in CO if the stuff hits the fan.

Ive heard its a ripoff. You pay for basic legal advice, but if you really need help you gotta payup.

Which is ok, and what everyone else does when they really need a lawyer.

I say get to know some lawyers that are pro CHL and call on them when you need them, save your money.

Not selling for them....but if it's a situation and I need an atty in AZ or LA, etc at the time...I should be able to get a reference atty to handle normal stuff after any incident.
I think that is worth it there!

Here are some of my comments from packing.org:
cost of a lawyer We had a seminar at the range in the summer of 2005. A criminal defense attorney spoke. We asked him "How Much?" about a dozen different ways.

The closest thing to an answer was:
"The price of a car."

Next question:
"What kind of car?"

The better the shoot...
the more witnesses with your side of the story...
the worse the bad guy...
the less your freedom is worth...
the less the rest of your life is worth...
the worse you are injured...
the fewer feet you stick in your mouth with the detectives and the press...
the more the county prosecutor likes you...
The cheaper the car.

Gun club membership Here is an alternative solution:

Our gun club (http://www.Psc-range.com) in the Houston area, changed insurance providers this year.

The new company offered us a similar coverage to get us to change.

All of our members are covered by $50,000 worth of legal insurance. There are limitations and exclusions that I won't get into here but, if you are a member of a gun club, you may be covered under their policy. Even for things that happen "Off the range".

If you are a member of my gun club, you are covered automaticaly.

Maybe I am just lucky but... Maybe I am just lucky but...

I shoot with at least 6 lawyers AND
this summer, I attended a Texas CHL related legal seminar with a 7th.

None of the 6 I shoot with, specialize in Criminal Defense.

None of the lawyers I know will come bail me out of jail at 2AM. A lawyer that works the 2AM time frame would either be too expensive for me OR not good enough.

Plan A
Don't get involved in questionable shooting.

Plan B
If the shooting I am involved in is questioned, and I am arrested then my wife or my children will work with the bail bonds man to get me out of jail.

Once I am out of jail, I'll get a reference from one of the lawyers I shoot with, or the bail bonds man, or one of my CHL instructors, or one of my shooting buddies.

I expect my legal fees to be the price of a car. The less questionable the shoot, the cheaper the car.

Your mileage may vary.

Lawyer A few thoughts.

You don't need a lawyer now. You may need a bail bondsman. If you are involved in a shooting, you won't need a lawyer until the sun comes back up. If you have enough time to surf packing.org, you don't have enough money to pay a GREAT lawyer to come pick you up from jail at 2:00 AM.

A way of dealing with any concern is to figure what to do in a worst case scenario. The first step is to define your worst case scenario.

SO...
Here is my worst case scenario
1) I will be arrested on a felony charge and will spend the night (or the weekend) in jail.
2) All of my firearms will be confiscated.
3) Bail will be set at least $20,000 and it will cost me $2,000 to the bail bondsman to get out of jail.
4) A lawyer will cost me the price of a car.
5) I will not be able to possess firearms until the case is resolved.
6) I could loose the case, go to prison, and never be able to own firearms again.
7) I will have to move to another neighborhood.
8) I will loose my job.
9) My wife will divorce me.
10) My children will stop speaking to me.
11) My friends will avoid me.

Remember this is my worst case.

So, if I shoot, it's got to be worth all this.
My life, my wife, my kids, and my family are all worth it.

The least concern I have today is finding a lawyer. There are plenty of criminal defense attorneys. I will be able to find one if I need one.

I would not buy Lawyer Insurance. The lawyer you get, may not be the lawyer you need.

I would not hire a lawyer now. (see above.)

I don't think much of "legal" insurance.
2:00 AM after being arrested for 'shooting a bad guy' is not the time for legal advise.
At 2:00 AM just shut up, hire a bail bondsman, get out of jail, let the sun come up and the coffee kick in, then find a lawyer.
If scum-of-the-earth like the bad guy you just shot can find a criminal defense attorney when they need it, an honest citizen like you should have no problem.

It's been years, but I ran into this thread again.

I still agree with everything I said before
except that
I think my worst case is bleaker than todays reality.

The best criminal defense lawyer in the state of Texas may be:
Rusty Hardin (and his team of lawyers) here in Houston
