Ban Hidden Compartments in Cars? Ohio
Might want to keep an eye on THIS.
"COLUMBUS, Ohio — An Ohio Senate committee has approved a bill to ban hidden compartments in vehicles to help crack down on drug trafficking."

Sir, you're under arrest for "possession of an unauthorized/aftermarket empty compartment".

How funny.
I can't see in the engine compartment, the hood isn't clear.... felony arrest.
It can't hold up.
And it exempts "Dealer-installed" compartments. So, drug "dealers" will have to get "car dealer" licenses to continue ...
crazy law can't hold up.
Your purse is in the car, I can't see in it like your kid's clear backpack ....
secret compartment arrest ...
===============================================
That's exactly what it is, the clear backpack solution.
Take everyone's privacy to avoid some possible offense by a criminal.

Another example of why the "War on Drugs" is suffering from the insanity of doing the same things over and over and expecting the results to change..... The magnitude of stupid grows while Liberty suffers.

I called Sen Hughes's (R) office (bill sponsor) and told them I was a life-long conservative Republican who supports law and order. However, I am not willing to sacrifice personal liberty at the altar of the "War on Drugs".
The fix is in with this bill. Promises made, horse-trading completed, old favors called in. They've greased the fast track chute.
Disgusting. So glad I am in Texas!
BTW, the NRA has signed off and is not opposing this bill.

Re: Ban Hidden Compartments in Cars? Ohio
There is already a Federal Law covering secret compartments, and the Feds use it as a basis for confiscating a vehicle.....I've heard it applied to boats and I'm not sure if it applies to cars and trucks. In any case though.....this law makes sense...because it would be terribly unfair for people to hide things in their cars, especially guns, where thieves can't find them. Have you no sense of social justice?

Re: Ban Hidden Compartments in Cars? Ohio
When was the last time anyone saw a dealership offering gun safes in cars? Would I need to have a dealer install my nanovault in my truck? The measure exempts dealer-installed compartments to address concerns from gun owners who worried how it would affect special vehicle compartments used to secure legal firearms.

How do they plan on noticing the hidden compartments? Aren't they, you know, hidden?threoh8 wrote:Might want to keep an eye on THIS.

I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

Guess this bans gun safes in cars. How are you to secure your gun if you leave it in your vehicle?

The law exempts hidden compartments that are dealer-installed. Fortunately, I'm my own dealer (as far as they know), so I can install whatever I want... in Ohio... I think...MeMelYup wrote:Guess this bans gun safes in cars. How are you to secure your gun if you leave it in your vehicle?

Oh, hey, if you bought you car used I wonder if you're liable for who the previous owner hired to do the installation?

Last year a big three (Dodge/Ram?) was advertising rifle storage in the sidewalls of the truck bed.MasterOfNone wrote: When was the last time anyone saw a dealership offering gun safes in cars?

Re: Ban Hidden Compartments in Cars? Ohio
Of course you are, unless you can prove you didn't add it. They probably couldn't convict you in court, but then they don't bother with that anyway, they'll just confiscate the car. Since the lawyer fees to get it back probably average around $30,000, it's unlikely they'll have to give it back. It's the new "freedom." Hiding your OWN PROPERTY in your OWN PROPERTY is a crime.Dave2 wrote:Oh, hey, if you bought you car used I wonder if you're liable for who the previous owner hired to do the installation?
