Best CHL Classes in NE DFW Area?

#1

Post by EricB »

I live in Murphy (just east of Plano/Richardson, north of Garland) - what are some recommendations for classes up in this area? I have been leaning toward the Texas Concealed Carry Institute in McKinney, as it is run by former and current LEO, has anyone had their CC classes?

Also, what recommendations for carry style/holsters for a person of smaller frame (5'8", 160lb) - I currently have a Taurus 809 w/4" barrel. I work in telecom installation, so no dress clothes (I dress like a college kid more than someone of 55 - but I like that!).

Thanks for your help!

I dont know about best, but there is guy who is Lt. in the allen police dept who runs
http://www.bearventures.net/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
He often holds classes at the Cabelas in Allen. the class was good and i was well prepared for the exam. the only drawback is he uses a range in Sherman for qualifying so it makes for a long day but it gets done and the drive is a nice break in the day. Otherwise the BulletTrap in Plano runs one day sessions I believe.

I have not taken their CHL class. However, I have taken a couple of their advanced pistol classes. I was happy with the training I received and plan to attend other classes. I assume they do the qualifying on the same range as the pistol classes. The range used for advance training is private,outdoors and just West of McKinney.

Thanks for the input. They sure have a comprehensive selection of tactical/defensive classes there.
A coworker suggested another guy who does the class for $75, all included (except for prints, of course), and have signed up for Jan. 21.

Now, off to the range to dial in!

I just got mine done at Texas Handgun Academy. They do classes 7 days a week which makes for small classes and they have their own in house range so you get the shooting test done the same day. It's only $100 and it's off LBJ (635) and Jupiter. http://texashandgunacademy.com/chl.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And as far as carry holsters, you should check out Crossbreed. I just ordered mine last week after extensive research. I am a smaller framed guy too, and I have a Taurus 740 slim. Just search you-tube for crossbreed holsters and you will find lots of videos of guys wearing full size guns like 1911's and you can barely see them under their shirts.

They aren't cheap but from what I have heard, they are worth the money. http://www.crossbreedholsters.com/Super ... roductName" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I took my initial CHL class at Bullet Trap in Plano and I will not go back there. Did not like the instructors presentation or the fact that I had to come back another day for the range portion. That was over 8 years ago, maybe they have straightened up some, but, I kinda doubt it.

Concealed Carry Institute in McKinney is a good couple of instructors (LEO's). I took my 1st renewal there and will probably go back next year for my 2nd renewal.
They teach you what you need to know and do not talk down to you or give out any misinformation. Their range is a small PRIVATE outdoor range just West of McKinney. There is no charge to you for the use of this range when you are in a class.

Red River Firearms Range in Sherman is a really nice and clean indoor range. I shoot there often. I believe at least one of their instructors is a Deputy Sheriff with Grayson County S.O.). I may end up taking my 2nd renewal there next year (instead of McKinney) as I am only about 15mi from there and their price is comparable.

Hi EricB,

I live in Murphy and am teaching a class on the 28th. It will be in Nevada, just outside of Wylie. Let me know if you want more info, or see my post in the class locations forum on here.

Hi, Brian - thanks so much for the offer, I would have loved to take your class as we lived in Wylie for 16 years before moving to Murphy in '04, but I took my class already (yesterday the 21st). I'm sure I would have enjoyed learning the ropes from a "local guy"!

All the same, I can fully endorse Russ and Debbie Murphys' CHL class (and I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules by doing so!)

I just took a CHL class at http://www.personalperimeter.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; at Grand Prarie. Richard Schilling was my instructor and he made the class entertaining and informative. He also gives preference to military active, reserve and retired. :patriot:

I will recommend it to all my friends and anyone who is in the area.

Thanks for the kind words. A good group of students makes the class more enjoyable.

I went to Dallas Concealed Carry (dallasconcealedcarry.com) about a week and a half ago.
The instructor was Daniel Harmon and I vouch for him. The class is informative and actually exciting. Wait until you hear his story. Before the CHL class, I emailed him and he said the class was "open notes". That took the pressure off. But in the last 20 minutes he reviews everything you need to know...you get it all twice.

I'd recommend you go there.
