My brothers first hand gun: Taurus pt809

My brother and his wife wanted a Handgun for house protection. So my dad and I got one for him for Christmas. We are tight on money this year so did not have a lot to spend. We were trying to find something around ~200 but nothing nice new or used were available, wanted to get him a Hi Point .45(don't laugh I have great experiences with hi points) but they were sold out. We finally decided to send a little more and get a s&w Sigma. We went to Academy but the sale on the sigmas expired but they had a sale on their Taurus pt809 for $299+tax. This gun is an excellent value: 17+1 9mm, SA/DA(strike 2 capable), external hammer, manual safety/decocker, fully ambidextrous, and light rail. I cant wait to go out and shoot it and show my brother how to shoot! This is his second gun his first was a Mossberg Maverick 12ga I got him for his birthday.

I used to have an 845 which is the same gun in .45acp. It shot VERY well, in 9mm it should be a dream to shoot, I would imagine the recoil would be next to nil. Does it have the three dot sights or the Haynie 2 Dot ?

it's the novak's 3 dot. kinda wish it had the strait 8 sight your talking about

Slightly off topic (OK alot off topic), but does anyone know where I can get a chamber brush like the one in the first picture? I got one with a Taurus I bought a while ago and gthey are very useful for quick and easy cleaning at the range, etc. I have looked all over, but can't seem to find a place that sells them.

OP: IMHO, this is a better pistol than any Highpoint (quality), or a SW Sigma (round count).

Well, I think in the long run you will like the three dot better. With the Straight Eight on the Taurus weapon the front or top dot has to cover where you want to hit. This is great for combat/defense, but it makes it a pain for target shooting. I have the Haynie sight on my PT111 and love it because it is one of my carry guns, and not meant to be a "target" pistol. Most people that get the Haynie sights claim their guns shoot low, that is because with the 2 dot you have to use a "center " hold as opposed to a 6 O'clock hold with a three dot where the center of the target or the desired point of impact sits on top of the center/front dot.

The other issue I found is that Taurus has three front sight heigths available. I think they have them all in the same parts bin and you get what you get. I proved it the day I bought my PT845 at Academy. We pulled 3 guns out and all three had different front sights. The tallest will shoot the lowest and the shortest will shoot the highest. I always pick the tallest sights in this situation, you can file off the top a lot easier than you can add to it. LOL

I hope I haven't confused the issue, these pain meds make me ramble. LOL

It was real nice of you and your dad. What a great present! Hopefully, your brother's wife will also take active interest in shooting it (and training, etc, if she's not had any) as well.

Bought my son a Taurus 809 for Christmas. His first firearm.

We went to the range with it on Monday Jan 2. What a great pistol.

He shot about 250 rounds WWB without any hiccup at all. No FTF, nothing but bang!Sweet!

Interesting note: Had 2 guys come down from about 3 lanes to our right and want to know what he was shooting. Says us, Taurus 9mm 809. They commented that it had a very big bang; more that what they though a 9mil usually was.

The sights are very easy to see; nice grouping all the way around.

Easy to strip, clean and reassemble. And, with a 17 round mag, lots of shooting before reload.

Might have to go to Academy and get me one before the price expires.

Great gun so far, encouraging to see that others are enjoying it as well.
I will have to get used to the sights a bit, I am struggling with consistently low groups so far.
Just have to practice more!

See my above post about the sights. If you have the three dot sights there are 3 different heights.
