Been awhile since I checked in here. I am also up for renewal in October. How have the turnarounds been on renewals?

Most excellent! Santa brought my 6yo daughter a pink Crickett .22. We are hoping to get out this weekend. I don't know who is more excited either!Armed-Texan wrote: on an even better note, taking my six year old to the range for the first time ever in the morning. he got a marlin 795 .22 for Christmas. i don't know who is more excited, him or his old man!!!

My recent renewal was 24 calendar days from USPS tracking receipt in Austin to postmark on the envelope containing the new plastic. The DPS has made great strides the last several years in speeding up the process. Nowadays, new applicants are unhappy if they don't see the license in fewer than 60 days.Armed-Texan wrote:Been awhile since I checked in here. I am also up for renewal in October. Come to think of it--considering that we mostly see questions and complaints on the Forum about the DPS turnaround--I think we need to pause and give a big round of applause for the amazing improvements the DPS has made in the span of a few short years. Our own Charles Cotton was a leader for that change, as was the TSRA and Alice Tripp.
In 2004 or 2005, you could expect the 60-day policy to be exceeded on almost every new application. Folks with no arrests and squeaky-clean records routinely reported 75- to 90-day waits.
Today, a lot of new applicants express frustration with the DPS, but as a BPM (Business Process Management) guy I gotta say, their improvement on most levels related to CHL vetting, investigation, and delivery has been better and faster than I would expect from most private-sector Fortune 500s.
Improvement never stops. Nothing is perfect. But the changes effected by Charles, Alice, the new DPS management, and others have made a huge difference in the CHL process.

Re: I'm Baaaack!!!
back from the range. it was amazing. i had the best time i have ever had at the range. i had planned to shoot my .308 and .45 but we sat at the 50yd range and he went through 100 rounds of .22 and i went through about 60 rounds of .223 he only hit paper about five times, but i am so proud of that boy!
he may be addicted already though. while we were getting in the truck to leave, he said he would pay for the next trip. on the ride home i asked if he had any questions and all he asked was "are we going back next weekend?"

WOW! Don't you have any earmuffs that are smaller than he is? Those pics take me back a long time......I spent a summer working at a Boy Scout summer camp rifle range some years back. The sparkle in the eyes and the grin says it all!

As for renewals, I did mine online and had the plastic in my hand in about 31 days.

What a great post. The pictures say it all. What a great experience for you and your son. It reminds me of shooting jackrabbits and rattlesnakes out in the New Mexico deserts with my dad [some 58 years ago].
You are building great memories and spending time with your son is the best character building experience he will ever have. Good for you!
