Re: Inexpensive Home Defense Shotgun
Of course my use of the Navy was an exaggeration. But this neighbor does not have an Army behind him either. I was simply stating a projection of force can go a long way. Never did I say to flaunt the weapon. Flaunting would be knocking on his door and showing it to him, running down the street screaming 'look at my new shotgun'. Calling the neighbor and reminding him of your new pretty purchase. I don't think I was saying that in the least.
I recommend you don't flaunt it, just make it clear what you have.

Why? I love the look in a predator's eyes when they learn it's not a sheep he's dealing with. Shotguns are the great equalizer (sorry Col. Colt but it's true) way more than a handgun. Never show your hole card.stroguy wrote:

I agree with the suggestion of a Coach Gun. An old time gun writer, Major George C. Nonte, once said "The speed someone comes to your point of view is inversely proportional to the square of the bore." He called it Nonte's axiom. He said a double barrel 10 gauge was the ultimate persuader.
"To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them."

...you'd have to be a Marine to appreciate my remark about the Navy...
...given the facts as we've been given them, I still say keep your gun private unless you need it...flaunt may not be the best word, but if they have to use it, having wagged it about the yard and such will come up to accuse them of wanting to use it...that was my point...don't bluff...don't threaten...just do what the situation calls for when HE brings it to YOU...on that we're agreed...

Yeah buddy! That little single shot with a butt cuff can't get any simpler than that and with practice you can get six aimed shots off in a minute or less. Gun is ~$100 butt cuff ~$5 2/0 buckshot ammo 15 round value pack at Wal Mart $10. So for $125 or so you can defend yourself. Maybe not optimum but it beats a stick and stern look.Armybrat wrote:

You got to be willing to walk away. Not pretending to walk away but actually do it. That's the first step.bronco78 wrote:In the Killeen area, most guns are marked at or near MSRP,, and the "dicker" down price is in the common high end of used gun prices for a privet sale. so an 870 is going to be tagged $380 or so, and go out the door at $250 or more....... Im seeing the same thing on hand guns,,rifles.. Perhaps I just suck at pawnshopping I'd be happy to take a lesson Or,,, hey,, Is there an App for that

SO taken under advisement, though, I do, every single time I stop in the Action Pawn in Killeen, and Cove.. As I refuse to pay TOP dollar for a used gun at a business that is not more capable of supporting the after sale then walmart. I’d prefer to buy at that kind of used $$ from a privet seller.Tamie wrote:You got to be willing to walk away. Not pretending to walk away but actually do it. I guess I need to try coming in every other day for aw a week, walking each time I do not get counter offered a reasonable price. Vice the once every other month opportunity I give them to make a sale. Quite honestly, if I would be offered even average deals, I’d likely walk away with a gun most every time.

Re: Inexpensive Home Defense Shotgun
If I had to buy new, I'd go for a mexican built (assembled in El Paso) Maverick over the chi-com guns.
I used to have a 1300 just like that, but it went to a friend who needed it more. I was in a local pawnshop last spring and saw one, got it for $230 but I really wanted one again (love the corncob).
I also lucked into an LEO 870 Wingmaster for $130. A former Dallas PD instructor dated it to the early/mid 60s. It will be passed on to one of my kids.

This is a good idea. I really like and personally shoot a 1300. There are however, a lot more accessories for the 870 or 500. Either of those would be great. The pardner mentioned above should also be a good choice. It is a heavier copy of the 870 so it should have slightly less recoil. The Maverick is light and has a good amount of recoil but imo, it is a solid gun for a very cheap price. If, however, you could pick up a used 870, 500, or 1300 in good shape, that would be even better.karder wrote:Check out the pawn shops. I have a really nice winchester 1300 that I got from a pawn shop for less than $120 if I remember correctly. My brother got a 870 from a pawn shop for about $150 and it looked new. I often see very lightly used shotguns for great deals at those places.
