Inexpensive Home Defense Shotgun

I need some advice on a really inexpensive shotgun for home defense.
I work with a person who has a crazy neighbor who has threatened his family numerous time.
The sheriff has been involved and even recommended that they get a gun.
(One of those "we cant do anything yet" situations)

Well, they did. They borrowed a Glock 9mm.

They having never owned a gun, I highly recommended they get a shotgun instead.
He is willing if they can find one that is pretty inexpensive.

I know. "how much is your life worth?" but the fact is, if it is not inexpensive, they simply will not buy it.
They dont have a lot of money.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive yet reliable enough for self defense shotgun?

Maverick. The Stevens is to Savage as Maverick is to Mossberg. More of a baseline product but will surely get the job done. Something like $200 for a brand new Maverick, and I'm pretty sure theyre made in Texas.

This might get moved to rifle and shotgun but a Mossberg Maverick is the cheapest 12 gauge new that I have shot and it seems cheaper then even a Mossberg or Remington but worked great and cycled a round every time. I think my father payed 120 at the time new. Academy says 159 on their website. Gun was cheap but he has put over 200 rounds through it with no problems so far. Also, nothing wrong with a good used shotgun!

Also, they can be hard to find at times if I remember correctly. Academy is the one that always has them but they are so cheap people buy them as soon as they put them out on the shelf. Just like the 870 youth 20, the run out quick!

Google reviews on the H&R Pardner Protector. Cabella's has them for $169.99 until 12/14. I purchased one on Saturday and the fit and finish is very close to my 870.

...I've bought all my shotguns at pawn shops...winchester, mossberg...$125-175 in great shape...I'd recommend 20 ga for beginners/ladies...

It has an even smaller stock and is lighter then a youth 20 but I can still hold it.

Unfortunately, the Model 870 is too expensive.

Like I said my dad has had no problems with it and it will get the job done. Nothing fancy. I think it is just the most common one because Academy carries them. Like Steve said the H&R might be an option also but I personally would just buy a Mossberg 500 as my starting point but they are not in the budget as you said. My brother has the 500 and my dad has a Maverick 88. They both prefer the 500 over the 88 but I think reliability is probably similar just fit and finish and maybe where they are assembled are the differences.

EDIT: And they both like my 870 better!

for NIB.... my choice is also the Maverick 88. Got the 18.5" model sitting right next to my desk in my office.

Check out the pawn shops. I have a really nice winchester 1300 that I got from a pawn shop for less than $120 if I remember correctly. My brother got a 870 from a pawn shop for about $150 and it looked new. I often see very lightly used shotguns for great deals at those places.

I have a maverick 88 and even did some upgrades to it. But works great. Academy on sale usually for around the $170 mark.
