What about a bag per person to share the load a little? Depending on the age of the kiddos, might just be a simple backpack with a stuffed animal, blanket, book and perhaps a few necessities to help get buy a few scary nights. My kids are teens and a couple of 'em could probably carry as much or more than I could now. I've been thinking about getting a pack for the big dog too. 80lb Weim that could certainly carry a liter or two of water, some kibble and collapsible bowls.

I have an old aluminum framed backpack with a few miles on it but it's still in good shape and could be loaded down with more than I can carry. Apparently they don't cost anywhere as much as they used to. I think they're better for long-hikes with a heavy load but not so much for climbing, balancing and maneuvering in tight spaces. Could probably rig something up using a something like a Guide's frame (Cabela's sells 'em) with an internal frame pack strapped on to get the best of both worlds. Well, kind of like this: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunting/ ... t104345280 I'd still be more inclined to roll my own using a guide frame with an internal framed pack I liked though.

Cabela's also sells a 3 day bag in their camping section. Small, backpack, and has most of the stuff mentioned above. I carry two of this stuffed in an Alice pack along with more food, dog food, lights, ammo, etc.

a pre-built bag is better than nothing, but it's usually cheaper to build one for yourself and tailor it to your specific needs.

Is the "norm" to have 72 hrs worth of supplies? I am just curious where that duration came from?

With the early season tornado outbreak, hurricanes, floods and now the fires here in Texas, it really strikes me as something that we must have ready to go. I am fortunate that I have a 2nd home a little over an hour away on a lake with lots of deer around. I figure if the crap every really hit the fan here, I could head there and be in pretty decent shape. It has pretty much everything, 12.5 kW generator, RV style fridge that works on electric and propane and a propane stove. Inverter that will run everything except Microwave and A/C for about 5 hours. All family members, and extended family, know that is the meeting place if they have to evacuate their home for any reason.

It's a good start. If anything it will give you time to assess the situation and determine your next course of action.
