Second! I'm all for supporting the local guy just on principle. Not to mention the time factor - if I can get something local, that saves me lots of time/gas from, say, running in to the "big city". And there's also the fact that, by supporting the small shops, we support competition that puts pressure on the big stores to keep their prices more reasonable. Just my $0.02.RoyGBiv wrote:Do your local guy a favor and let him have a shot at meeting the best price you can (legitimately) find.AEA wrote:And the good news is no more calling in when you buy your next gun (once you get your CHL).
Plus, if you buy your next gun online and have it shipped to one of our friendly FFL's from this site that charge avg $10.00 for transfer you will really be making out. Gun prices online cannot be beat by local retailers.
Go around to the local gun shops to fondle what you have in mind, decide on exactly what it is you want and then search online for the best prices. Gunsamerica is a good place to start your price search.
Without the local dealers, you wouldn't have a place to go touch that new gun before you buy it. At least give them a chance.
I'm prepared to pay a bit extra (in sales tax plus a bit higher price if necessary) to help a good local guy stay in business.
How many times have you seen a gun in the news, fell in love, then found out it wasn't "the one" for you when you held it in your hands?
There's real value in that... No?
IMO, YMMV.

As long as they have reasonable prices and don't try to run a NICS check on customers who have a CHL.

Active CHL = clear background check = walking out with the gun
I find it as one of the perks to having a CHL - I'm out in 10 minutes

It's so nice being able to skip that background check, and then you get that your in the club nod, you don't get that online.doc.lonestar wrote:Active CHL = clear background check = walking out with the gun

Re: Buying guns vs CHL
If a gun merchant wants to call in for a purchase I don't have any problem with it
He/She is just tring to be reputable and cover himself if there is a ???
If someone becomes barred from purchase before the expiration date on a CHL that is revoked
then there could be issues new fed laws passed etc that we won't like

I have a problem because I dont trust the feds, my time is valuable to me, and I randomly get delays from a common name. The idea of a SSN on the form is a myth, it has no effect.stephengauntt wrote:If a gun merchant wants to call in for a purchase I don't have any problem with it

There is no need to "cover himself", that is what the 4473 does. If you got a legit CHL card then he is only required to use it, he can not know if you just got busted for something and it was revoked. Straw purchases are in the same vein, the dealer cant know you are breaking the law if you dont tell him in some way. I had a pawn shop pull that crap on me and I walked out, it was ridiculous. They also wanted copies of my TDL and CHL "for their files". Pawn shops arent the most secure places and they had no need for my data.

Having looked at this post again, I am wondering what the intent of it is.FireAtWill wrote:OK,
New to the forums but wanted to share my last experience and a little frustration.
For my CHL license:
Paid $250 total, Took a 10 hour class, went to go get fingerprinted, went to post office to mail packet, waited a month.
Went to buy a concealed gun last week (not yet approved for CHL):
Filled out one page
They called it in
30 seconds later was writing the check and walking out the door.
They even asked me if I wanted to buy ammo with it.
So a less honest individual could enter a store, buy a gun, ammo, and illegally carry 30 seconds later. But to be "legal" my background check took 2 weeks and over a month soup to nuts.
Just some levity about the process.
-I am not sure what the phrase, "buy a concealed gun" means.
-How would anyone be less honest by coming in the store and buying a gun and ammo? It sounds like the store owner complied with the law. Am I missing something here?

...you're not the one missing something...some folks don't understand what NICS checks cost a lot of innocent folks who should be approved instantly, because of flaws in the system...some folks have never been denied wrongfully and had to fight that battle...and some folks don't mind the gooberment putting their thumb in our backs just a bit more...I ain't none of those folks...you ain't neither!!!
...I WON'T buy where they want to call it in even though I've got my CHL...we shouldn't give them what's not required by law...it's about our rights...

Re: Buying guns vs CHL
If someone has bad intentions, they can buy a gun quickly. If they plan to commit rape or murder, a misdemeanor gun charge is nothing in comparison. Therefore, the long wait for a CHL doesn't slow down a BG and only hurts the good guys.Purplehood wrote:Having looked at this post again, I am wondering what the intent of it is.FireAtWill wrote:OK,

Re: Buying guns vs CHL
I think his intent, and forgive me if I am wrong, is to point out how easy it was to get a gun that he plans to use as his concealed weapon while his background check for his CHL is taking weeks to complete. Just a little irony.
