I have no problem with mail tampering remaining illegal (in fact I'd prefer it did stay that way), but there's really nothing to stop it from going on right now. Most people work during the day, so they probably won't be rushing out to get their mail as it's delivered. You could probably count on nobody seeing what you're doing for the same reason.

Most of what's been caught around here was people going around at 1-3AM fishing through mailboxes, apparently on the theory that anything left in the box at that time wouldn't be missed for a while.

Huh... I'd have avoided doing anything at that hour for fear that I'd make a noise which would cause people to investigate and find me. OTOH, you did say that was when most of the people were caught, so maybe the other ones are getting away with it? Eh, it's a moot point for me, since my tactical strategy for staying out of jail mostly involves not breaking the law.

Even after Charles' explanation of "incident to" I still don't see the distinction between hunting and defending one's self in a PO. Saying that no one goes into a PO actively defending themselves can also be said of hunting. What would I be actively hunting in a PO?

Section 18 U.S.C. concerns any Federal facility, not just Post Offices. I believe it is also is the statue that the COE uses to enforce no firearms on lakes under their control.

...we've gone to pickin' the fly poop outa the pepper...the problem is our government, who won't/can't protect us, has the power to keep us from protecting ourselves while doing something as simple as mailing a letter...and we're letting them get away with it...which is how we got into this mess...votes are heard a lot clearer than grumbling in Washington...

I ship USPS. I find it irritating I cannot stop by there to drop packages if I'm out and about running other errands. I'd sure like to see this change.

Some businesses will accept prepaid priority mail packages for the postman to pick up later. The Office Depot near my house here in Austin does that as well as accepting prepaid UPS packages. I drop off priority mail packages there all the time. But you cannot do certified mail, return receipt, registered mail, etc. that way. And I have not found a way to get those services except at a post office.

I say give we should give first priority to repeal of the ridiculous ACOE ban in wildnerness areas before going after the somewhat more defendable Post Office ban.
