Will DPS use existing fingerprints on file for CHL?

#1

Post by ddg »

I have been fingerprinted more times than I care to count for various jobs. Most recently, my PI license required it. This was done via L-1 in the last 6 mos.

Will DPS use that or do I have to go through the whole process again? Tried to email and call the Contact Us number only to sit indefinitely or be told no one could help me right now.

You need to go thru L1 for your prints, even if you have them on file already.... Sorry

Thanks Teamless,

I was afraid of that. Just noticed you are in my neck of the woods. Going to the Arms Room tomorrow with Estep for the class.

I understand your pain, This past year I was finger printed at L1 4 times. For CHL, CHL Instructor, Foster parenting back ground check, and for my process server background check. The people at L1 by my house know me by name now lol.

Sometimes they do and I guess sometimes they don't.

he is a GREAT instructor, but to be sure you are with Tom, you need to call Tom directly (http://www.tomestepshooting.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and not go through The Arms Room to schedule it, as it may go to their other instructors. I have no issue with the others, but they aren't Tom and he is definitely one to go with!

I think the CHL division uses the existing fingerprints they have on file. For renewals for example, but don't use fingerprints from different divisions of DPS.

My understanding is that with the switch to L-1, prints will be reused going forward. The new digital prints lend themselves to resubmitting an infinite number of times. The only reason you should have to retake the prints are if they get rejected at some point in the future due to a change in standards.

I think, but not sure, that with the paper prints a copy went to the feds and was not returned after they were run. So a new set was required each time.

You do realize that the people who are renewing now probably submitted paper prints.

I'm not even sure L1 was an option 5 years ago.

Dear Sweet Wife & I renewed last summer. Neither of us had to send in new fingerprints or photos.

YMMV

It was explained today in the CHL instructor class that the issue is the FBI. They require a new set of prints for each type of application. They won't accept prints done for some other purpose for CHL. Prints already on file for a CHL can be resubmitted on renewals because it's for the same purpose the prints were originally taken for.

They said if the FBI changed their policy, they could submit prints already on file in the dps system for the chl.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. What I meant was, now that digital prints are required, they will be reused going forward. So, once you renew or get a new CHL and provide digital prints, you won't usually be reqired to resubmit them on subsequent renewals. The exception being if the Fed's reject the digital prints sometime in the future because of a change in their requirements at some time in the future.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. As of a few months ago, you don't have to submit new fingerprints or photos. This has nothing at all to do with L1 prints. It has to do with DPS improving things on their end. In other words, they are already re-using paper prints.

Also, it has been reported that soon they will be able to use your driver's license photo so most people won't need pictures either.

The paper prints were scanned and paper copies destroyed. They will resubmit the scanned copy for the renewals.
