Good range for shooting a Mosin (DFW)
I recently received a 1943 Tula M91/30 Mosin-Nagant from a good friend for my graduation (fantastic present). Now I need to find out where I can shoot this thing! I've looked around on the web a bit and it looks like Alpine may fit the bill. Does anyone have any experience there?
I'm in the DFW area (closer to Fort Worth) and the range should:
- be public
- not have a problem with 7.62x54R Russian mil-surp FMJ
- be outdoors? (I don't imagine there are many indoor ranges that want a Mosin being shot there)
Any suggestions?

I don't know if any of them allow Steel Core.

I much prefer Elm Fork in Los Colinas. It's worth the extra drive.
But I have not tried the longer rifle ranges. Nice folks, well-run, clean and spacious.

Magnum Sports in Sanger, it is a bit rustic but they have a 200 yeard range and it is never crowded. If you go there just call first to make sure they are open. Bring a staple gun and targets as they get attached to wooden pallets.........

I've shot my Mosin at Alpine, no problem. They don't allow FMJ, only HP or SP. They have a 100 yard and 50 yard ranges for centerfire rifles. The firing line is under cover and sitting shooting benches are provided. Check in and pay your fee at the store and get two targets. Take a stapler, all targets are placed on wood. If you go on a weekend you might want to get there early to beat the heat and crowd.

Where do you normally purchase your HP or SP 7.62x54R?USAFSP78-98 wrote:I've shot my Mosin at Alpine, no problem. They don't allow FMJ, only HP or SP.

I know that the Cabela's up in Allen had some recently, so I would think it's a good bet the Ft. Worth location would too.WickedOwl wrote:Where do you normally purchase your HP or SP 7.62x54R?USAFSP78-98 wrote:I've shot my Mosin at Alpine, no problem. They don't allow FMJ, only HP or SP.

I don't know if they allow it or not and it is on the East Side of DFW. Check Garland Public Range.

I bought a couple boxes of ammo from Military Gun Supply (PPU), and picked up a couple of boxes at the FTW gun show (Brown Bear).

Have shot one at Elm Fork also no issues. Be prepared to be amazed how accurate that rifle is. Its my sons and first time out we covered a half dollar hole. For 100.00 bucks and 74 years old I was impressed!

Interesting didnt know they allowed fmj on the tactical rangeAndyC wrote:You can shoot FMJ in the tactical bay at Elm Fork, but it's only 30 yards - they're building a 50-yard tactical range which will be opening in a month or so, apparently.
Alpine - haven't shot rifle there, but you could call them up and ask.
