Employer wants copy of my CHL.

My employer has a company policy forbidding firearms at work. I drive a company owned automobile and when I received my CHL I suggested they change the policy to "No unlicensed firearms"
They have told me they will change it but will require me to provide a photocopy of my CHL to be kept in my employment file.

Any comments on them asking and keeping a photocopy of my CHL?

Not sure why they would need it. I guess they just want proof that you have it???? I don't see anything wrong with it. They already have a copy of your DL I'm sure.

My employer asks for a copy of my DL for use of a Company vehicle. To me giving a CHL copy to prove I am licensed is along the same lines.

By law you aren't required to produce it for anyone except when asked for ID by a peace officer. As far as I am aware there is no law preventing you from providing them a copy. It's entirely up to you.

Personally, if I were in this position, since the company is already aware (or at least strongly suspects) that you have a CHL, I would provide them a photocopy. Especially if they really do change the policy to allow carry in company owned vehicles. It's really no different then them requiring you to provide a copy of your DL in order to drive said company owned vehicle.

I'd want to see the policy change IN WRITING first. Or a letter absolving you of compliance with the current policy. But that's just my non-legal, non-HR professional opinion - worth what you paid for it.

If you're driving their vehicle, I assume they already have a copy of your DL and even your insurance on file? Perhaps they're just using the same logic here? I dunno, does seem a bit strange - not sure what good it does them or you for them to have a copy of the actual CHL other than to prove to them you actually are licensed?

Also, the firearm is not licensed, you are. I would suggest the verbiage be 'No unlicensed possesion of a firearm is allowed'.

And, I agree with the others, see the change first and once there, then allow them to see you are legally licensed.

I'm curious as to why it matters to see the change first.

1) They already know (or at least strongly suspect) that the OP has a CHL.

2) Providing a copy of the CHL isn't an admission of carrying in violation of company policy and would therefore be unable to be used as cause for termination.

3) If they want to terminate him, well, this is TX; They don't need a reason for termination.

I guess I just don't see a good reason to have to see the new policy in effect before providing a copy.

What is to stop them from using your CHL as a reason to fire you? They can't prove you have one until you give them the copy. A lot of this rests on what kind of company you work for, what your personal relationship is like with your managers and/or company owners, and what you know (beyond any reasonable doubt) about their attitude toward guns. If you have no real relationship with them outside of being their employee, you're taking a risk that you can't quantify.

This is Texas where they can fire you for any reason such as having a blue bic pen in your shirt pocket or wearing socks that dont match. There is no justification required to fire anyone, short of proving they were not fired based on race, creed, or other protected EOE regulation.

my employers allows concealed carry but u have to give them a copy of your chl and stuff.


yea they can fire you for any reason but that doesnt mean you cant get unemployment at all.

Cool thing about unemployment is if the company challenges it, then TWC requires them to disclose why you were terminated. I had a friend who went through this recently.
