This hasn't been my experience. The Lewisville Wal-Mart ammo shelves were nearly empty yesterday. There probably were not more than 10 WWB items in any caliber. There were only a few boxes of Federal 9mm and not a single box of .380 in the display. Last year, I was on a 10 State vacation and was in Wal-Marts in many of them. I always went to the ammo counter, looking for WWB 9mm JHP. No one had them.surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Since the ammo supply has finally caught up to demand, I'm surprised that they are raising their prices.
Our forum's "ammo on sale" thread had effectively becoming an "Ammo found!" thread, and I used to contribute.
But I stopped long ago, since every Wal-Mart I visit has plenty of all major calibers.
If you shoot some kind of niche round, things aren't so peachy.
But if you shoot .38 Special, even .380, 9MM, .40, or .45 - Wally's been able to sell you all you can afford for some time now.
Of course if its .380 it may not be the best brands, but they're better than harsh words. :-)

Re: Wal-Mart WWB price goes up.....
Seems like I read somewhere about mixing steel and brass ammo being a problem. Something about shooting the steel rounds and getting the lacquer build up then while the gun is still hot shooting brass. The suggestion was that the brass would expand more than the steel due to being a softer metal then due to the lacquer build up the brass round would fail to extract. Don't know if there is any truth to it.Keith B wrote:Many people believe steel case ammo is harder on the internal parts of the gun due to steel being harder than the softer brass. Additionally, there were reports of gumming of the chamber from lacquer or other coatings on the cases due to it melting in hot barrels and sticking to the chamber.jimandyen wrote:I've been tempted to buy the Monarch steel cases because of the price I seem to remember awhile backbnc wrote:Last time I went to buy ammo Academy was out of WWB so I went with Monarch steel case for $9.49/50. reading that it's not good to use the steel case a lot. Anyone know why.... ?
I personally have used steel case ammo and never seen an issue, but really haven't used a large amount of it over a long period of time to see any potential negative affects.

but that can happen with any ammo that is over-loaded
I am on the side that feels steel case, if used a lot, can prematurely wear internal parts (especially extractors) and that the lacquer can gum up the works. To each his own, but for only a $1.48 per box savings ($9.49 for Monarch steel at Academy vs. $10.97 for Federal Champion brass at Wal Mart) I'll stick with brass. If I can save 30% or more on steel case, I might consider running it through my more stout semi-auto guns (like Glocks) and certainly wouldn't have a problem running it through revolvers (if you can find in steel case revolver ammo at 30% less than cost of brass).
Another issue I've had with the Monarch brand in general (brass and steel case) is the powder residue is VERY dirty and it takes me much longer to clean my gun after using this ammo. How much more solvent/patches/brushes am I using and does that add up to anywhere near $1.48 per box? Probably not, but then how much is my time worth for the extra cleaning?

My local WM is small and seldom has much inventory in ammo. WWB is $22.97/100 and has been for about a year. Never a sale or price break.
I use Monarch steel from Academy almost exclusively at the range except when the range bans steel cases. Never a problem with over 500 rds of Monarch steel.

Local Walmart increased the price of WWB about the middle of June.

not sure about my wallyworld yet, but gander went up 5 bucks to $35 for a box of WWB 100ct, as if they weren't already 10 bucks overpriced. My Academy says $25 on the sticker behind the counter, and since they finally got in a shipment after about a month I bought 2 boxes, the register is still set at 19.99 a box. I think I'm going back today just to stock up a bit more before management catches on.

Re: Wal-Mart WWB price goes up.....
I visited my favorite source for ammo about a month ago (sgammo.com).
They had a note on the home page that ammo prices were going up soon.
The note is gone now and I don't know if the increase ever came to be but I'm hoping it's not a trend.

I bought a box of WWB from gander mountain about 2 years ago. The guy at the gun counter looked in a book and said that Wal-Mart sold that box of 9mm for $19.99 and that gander would match it. Then he said he would be glad when walmart got out of the ammo business. I dont know if they still price match walmart. Maybe they can but since nobody ever asks, they dont.

Prices are up and real wages are down. Socialist economic policy is a big factor, but half the population doesn't pay taxes so they're happy to keep electing thieves who rob from the productive and give to the lazy.

Cabelas still has S & B 9mm 115 FMJ for $9.99 per 50 rounds- Picked up four boxes. They also have Federal 45ACP 230 FMJ for $15.99 per 50 rounds. Also picked up 4 boxes for my future Smith and Wesson M&P 45c.

Re: Wal-Mart WWB price goes up.....
Academy didnt raise there prices, so just go there over walmart. Its alot easier than trying to find someone to open the ammo cabnit anyway.

Re: Wal-Mart WWB price goes up.....
I stopped by my local WalMart this past Saturday for some .45 rounds and noticed that prices were up across the board. Revising my budget this morning to cover the added expense.....bye bye gym membership.

You could go back over to Academy with your receipt (if it's not too far) and try and get the price on the signs.rentz wrote:I went to one in Dallas this week and the prices were raised to walmarts but I didn't realize this until I got home and saw my receiptmichael e wrote:Academy didnt raise there prices, so just go there over walmart. (I think there's a legal issue there somewhere)
I've had that happen at stores where they have a sale and the register scanner shows the higher price.
Something to watch out for.

I have shot ALOT of steel cased ammo through my full auto weapons (MP5 & HK53 clones) and have not had any issues.
