Heh. That reminds me of my most recent visit from a religious organization known for door-to-door solicitation.

We have four dogs, all of whom think they're Pavlov's prize students when the doorbell rings. The two largest are no threat at all -- the standard poodle would help burglars load the truck, and the great dane/bloodhound cross would gladly tow them down the street if their battery died.

The scruffy little terrier mix is terrified of strangers. She'd hide, but if someone cornered her, she'd turn into a piranha with fur.

Soooo.... when the bell rang, all four charged the door. I shush them back, all except for Katie, the border collie/terrier mix. She's a scaredy-cat with people, except in our house, where she knows that Strangers Must Die.

I crack open the door, where our white-shirted visitor has opened the glass storm door. There had already been a canine cacophony when he range the bell, and for some reason he shut the storm door quickly when Katie appeared between me and him.

"I'm with the errr, ummm, does that dog bite?"

"Might. Can I help you?"

At that point the inner door was fully open, and he could plainly see that 45 pounds of quivering lip was backed by .45 ACP on the hip.

"I can see you're busy, so, uh, I'll just... uh... leave this here for you.... " He half-heartedly thrust a pamphlet towards the handle of the storm door, and double-timed in reverse down the sidewalk.

Good doggie.

I carry openly all the time around where I live. About the third time I headed off to town without a concealment garment, I decided just to leave an extra vest in the truck. I haven't gotten out of the truck without it on - yet. But the sun isn't up yet...

I need to run to Sac-n-save real fast. I use a Pad holster when I am in a rush. It's summer time, so I grab the nearest oversized t-shirt in my closet, throw it on, go to the store, which was quite crowded. When I come home, my daughter points out that I have a hole on the side of my t-shirt. I look in the mirror, and the Grips, butt and hammer are completely protruding out of the hole in my shirt.

Good thing I live in a Small town. No one said a thing. I even stood in line for a good 5 minutes. phew.....

About 15 minutes into the call, the doorbell rings. I'm on the cordless so I think nothing of it, just get up and go to the door.

Our subdivision is posted against door-to-door solicitors, but it does sometimes happen, as it did this time. It was a young guy at the door; and it wasn't until I saw his eyes drop from my face that I realize I'm wearing a T-shirt tucked into jeans, a gun belt, a double-magazine holder with two mags on my left side, and a full-sized, cocked-& locked 1911 in a Kydex OWB holster on my right.

Nothing illegal about it--I was standing in my own house--but I would never intend to shock a poor kid just trying to sell pest services or something.

It was a very brief sales pitch, though. He didn't want to stick around.
You know...I'm going to have to remember this next time I get a knock at the front door...

See, I have this sign, very prominently displayed that says "NO SOLICITORS"...

Its in white letters 1" high on a red background...And displayed at the nominal eye level of the average American...

But still I get these unsolicited sales calls on my front door...hmmmm...

I'ver tried ignoring them, but since our vehicles are sometimes both out in the driveway, they don't leave in a timely manner...I don't like sitting there on my couch ignoring someone at my front door relaxing, knowing they are there...Just kinda irritates me I guess...

I might go healing next time when I open the door for one of these "calls"

But that would make me a very hated person I suppose...

My two German Shepherds really like greeting visitors at the door when the bell rings. They help keep the solicitation to a minimum also. And if asked, YES they do bite.

Hey, maybe we need our own by-lingual version of 30.06 for no soliciters in contrasting letters 1" tall posted on each end of the sidewalk, to cross would be to be trespassing.

Well, I haven't gone out uncovered yet, but today I did forget my gun. Every morning I get dressed, slip on my IWB, clip on my scanner(Christmas gift, so addicting) and retrieve my gun from the bedside. Well this morning, all was going well. I got dressed, screwed up my usual order and grabbed the gun first, tossed it on the bed when I realized I didn't have my holster on yet. I put the holster at 5:30 and clipped on the scanner right next to it. Fixed the hair, ate breakfast, told the wife I loved her, and headed out the door. I got about 30min down the road and got a phone call. It was the wife.
"How do you put the safety on again?"
"Uh... what?"
"The safety, how do you put it on?"
"On what?" (knowing that she couldn't be referring to the gun on my hip)
"Your gun, duh."
"I FORGOT MY GUN???" :willynilly:
Immediately I reached around, as we all would, and felt noting but a gaping empty piece of kydex.
I was floored. I couldn't believe it. So I told her to flip the switch, as I had told her many times before when I didn't have my CHL and left it out, and she said, "Ok, have a good day. Love you." She's so good to me.
Man, typing this now at work, I can't help but pray that I don't need it today. You know that feeling? Its scary.

I carry under a large carhart jacket in the winter when doing chores at the ranch.

I had some hay delivered and helped the kid jockey chains. He was out of fuel so I got some jerry cans and dropped 10 gallons into his rig on the country road. I was bent over and saw him looking at my right hip where the XD45 in a OWB holster was sticking out in all its glory.

I pulled the pistol, told him I had a CHL, and then he asked to look at the XD. He expertly dropped the mag, did a press check, and handed it back to me. Only 19 but knew what he was doing.

We live out in the country, so its more of a pain for solicitors to walk between our houses.
My one and only personal dog is nice (and a coward), but my neighbors on both sides have an over-abundance of these large, redneck dogs. I'm not personally afraid of them; they know me and usually just want me to give them a cookie or make a fuss over them, but they're intimidating to visitors and pizza delivery people alike.
For security purposes, I'm glad they're around, as annoying as they can be sometime.

The NRA & TSRA are a bargain; they're much cheaper than the cold, dead hands experience.

I don't bother covering when I'm stepping out to one of our vehicles for something, or to our travel trailer that sits at the end of the driveway.

Just try not mowing or maintaining that ROW and see if the city doesn't think it's yours.

My dogs charge the door too, amid much ado that even our neighbors can hear. The Lab makes the most noise, and the Ridgeback looks the most threatening, but the one to be afraid of is the Maltepoo.

We have a new puppy in the house, a Dachshund, and the others are seeing to it that she becomes thoroughly indoctrinated in the "If it makes noise and you don't know what it is, charge at it and make noise back" school of dogginess in our house.

The worst part is when a doorbell ring on tv sounds like ours, and it takes five minutes to convince all the dogs that everything is ok.

I have left the house without concealment a time or two - got all the way to the range once and realized that I didn't have it on, but I am pretty good about covering up when going to the mailbox.

I can relate…

It was about a week before Xmas, and I was planning on doing some morning chores. I had just received a new holster the previous day and wanted to check it out, so I took my weapon out, set it on the kitchen table, and swapped holsters. I then got sidetracked on something, and you guessed it, forgot to put the gun back in the holster.

Well I went outside, got on the tractor and started the chores. I fed the heifers, took care of the horses, doctored the two sick bovines, and then went to finish some dam repairs on the water tank. All the time I was thinking this new holster is so comfortable I didn’t even feel like I was carrying…

I get off the tractor to open a gate to head back to the barn, and went to adjust my belt. That’s when I noticed the holster was empty! Now I didn’t realize I had left it on the table, I thought the weapon must have fallen out during my chores. I hot footed it around to all the places I had been (which were a lot), but no luck. About this time I’m getting very nervous…is it buried in the mud of the cattle pens? Did I entomb it in the tank dam? Is it somewhere in the fields pushed into the ground by the tractor tires?

After quite a long time of futile searching, I decide to go back to the house and go purchase a metal detector to find the Glock. When I walk in the house, I see the Glock sitting on the table, perfectly fine (and I’m sure laughing at me).

In over thirty years of carrying, I’ve never done anything this stupid before…
