Re: Best Texas Sausage
Loved this thread. I am normally a lurker but this thread was great - 'course it cost me a couple of bucks, hope that Cajun grub is tasty. I live in Plano - am willing to drive - love country meat markets, small Mom and Pops that do it right - please feel free to point out where I can go next. A bit off topic, I'm looking for calf fries - any recommendations?

Try V&V available at HEB's and Brookshire Brothers. I can't find their website but I did last week.Bullwhip wrote:Zummo's is okay, Earl Campbell is okay, neither one is really good.
I don't think there's any really good stuff in any supermarket in east tex. Some buddies make really great sausage. I find really good stuff in little corner marts in LA thouh.

Re: Best Texas Sausage
The last time I had those were in a restaurant near Sulphur Oklahoma. The people who took me to dinner thought they were tricking me into eating them. After I ate some and said that I liked them they asked me if I knew what they were.Dal686Tech wrote:A bit off topic, I'm looking for calf fries - any recommendations?
I am sure they are served at some restaurants, but I haven't seen them in Texas. There used to be a place you could buy them frozen, but I can't find the website.
I did find some "buffalo fries". They would be a nice treat for your next dinner party: http://www.exoticmeatsandmore.com/buffa ... sters.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I bought some Chappel Hill Jalapeno sausage to bring to a birthday party and the guests were impressed. "Chappel Hill! That's what I was brought up on."texanron wrote:I throw a vote in for Chappel Hill sausage!
I found some Chappel Hill Original at Target last weekend. It was very good.
Thanks for the tip!

Re: Best Texas Sausage
Chappel Hill does give V&V competition, especially since Chappel Hill has a variety of choices. That's the two I buy when I am out of deer sausage. I know we're talking commercial makers, but the best sausage is the stuff I get from Willie Joe Svetlik in High Hill from my deer. 60% veneison/40% pork with supreme seasoning and natually smoked. YUM YUM. He does sell his own brand of sausage as well which I assume is seasoned like the deer sausage. His High Hill Wieners (hot dogs) are worth a try as well. High Hill is near Schulenburg.WildBill wrote:I bought some Chappel Hill Jalapeno sausage to bring to a birthday party and the guests were impressed. "Chappel Hill! You can buy them at the Fiesta in Richardson located at Coit/Springvalley. Ask for criadillas del toro (a bit more polite than asking for huevos del toro) or look in the fresh beef section in the back of the store.WildBill wrote:Dal686Tech wrote:A bit off topic, I'm looking for calf fries - any recommendations?

Another vote for Holmes Smokehouse. A close second is Tallent's in Riverside right outside of Huntsville.

I lived in Brusly LA for a few years. Best stop is rated #1 in LA, and it's really really good. But the best I've had was from a small place in Plaquemine named Bergeron's.WildBill wrote:The best boudain I ever had was at:C-dub wrote:Boudain.

The best Boudin balls I've had came from a gas station in Port Allen.

Re: Best Texas Sausage
I'm just glad I could help! I bought some Chappel Hill Sausage Jalepeno for my Memorial Day cookout and the wife, who normally doesn't enjoy spicy foods, really enjoyed it. Now if I can just get her to eat it on a slice of bread with some mustard on it my job will be complete! She still slices it up and dips it in bbq sauce!WildBill wrote:I bought some Chappel Hill Jalapeno sausage to bring to a birthday party and the guests were impressed. "Chappel Hill!
