Is there any way we can check on the homeowner and see if he still has the means to protect himself?
Don't the police usually confiscate the gun while investigating cases like these?

Regarding how this case may be presented to the grand jury and further legal actions:

The homeowner stated "I didn't know what else to do" and doesn't sound confident in his
legal right to defend his home. It seems that he should have yelled at the perp to scare
him off. But I don't really fault him for firing through the window. If he hadn't, the perp
could further damage his home with the crow bar.

A more positive aspect of this situation is that he only fired 1 shot. It was enough to stop
the threat of the criminal entering his castle.

However, when one uses deadly force, there is always a strong chance that a single shot
will result in the perp's future inability to fog a mirror, as in this case.

Justice was already served.

FYI 17yo "teens" don't go to juvie.
My thought exactly... justice was served, however it was not the justice his mother expected.

The police most likely took the gun into evidence but the home owner should be able to get it back from evidence when the case closes.

Were the windows tinted, or was the teen able to clearly see that the homeowner knew that he was there? If he was seen by someone breaking in with a crowbar, and he continued to work to get in, the homeowner would likely conclude that the BG was armed with something other than the crowbar or was otherwise not quite "right in the head."

It's a sad state of affairs, but these days BG can be quite young. They can still hurt you though.

Clubbing someone over the head with a crowbar is deadly force.

I think the guy that shot him should SUE the mother of the child. Who else could possibly be responsible for the sons death other than her???? She had his entire life to raise him right, and to instill in him those qualities that would have kept him on the right path. It is unfortunate that the home-owner now has to deal with the pain of having had to do what the mother clearly failed at doing-and that is to protect the innocent from her bastard child. Sorry, I see reality when I open my eyes not the bull-poop political correctness others would have you see. The mother needs to pay for the window, more ammunition for the homeowner, and all the bills for mental counseling the home-owner may choose to attend. Amen to one less future "thug" on the earth. May others in similar situations have the same fortitude as that home-owner did.

I just reread Proverbs 29:15 - The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.
