Zummo's is okay, Earl Campbell is okay, neither one is really good.

I don't think there's any really good stuff in any supermarket in east tex. Some buddies make really great sausage. I find really good stuff in little corner marts in LA thouh.

I know them well! I flew for Industrial helicopters out of Scott. We'd get some in the mornings for us, as well as some to take to the guys off shore. Good stuff!!

Before I moved here I saw a show on TV about best BBQ in the Country... They said Blacks BBQ in Lockhart was awesome and they apparently also make sausage....

Anyone ever been there or had their food? It's about 2.5 hr drive and wanted to know if it was worth the time and $$$

Blacks BBQ is very good. I've stopped there a few times, when passing through, for some BBQ to take home. I'd say it's worth a trip, but there are so many great BBQ places in TX! That's one of the reasons I have this girlish figure!!

I knew some one would call me on that. My defense is that most of the boudain sold in Texas is just seasoned rice in a sausage casing.

Last month my motorcycle group did a Sausage Run in the Houston area. Everyone brought a collapsible cooler so we could buy a few links and take them home for our own scientific taste test. We visited Galvan's in Richmond, Vincek's in Eagle Lake, Belleville Meat Market in Belleville, and Chapel Hill Sausage Factory in Chapel Hill.
The hands down favorite among all the riders was Galvan's in Richmond. That was some mighty tasty sausage.

Just a hole in the wall place on Old Hwy 90 clost to Pitt's Rd. between the Exxon station and a place that sells BBQ smokers. They have maybe a dozen tables, so you can sit and sample, Mrs. Galvan will cut you off a small slice of each if you ask. Oh yeah, be sure to order your take home should you decide to get it by the pound, I just told them "a couple of links" and each link was about 4 foot long. Oh well, I just cut it up and put some in the freezer.

+1 for Chappell Hill. Their pork & venison sausage is the best of the mass-produced

I buy my husband sausage from Rehoboth Ranch and he really likes it. They sell it in Dallas, McKinney, Coppell, and Greenville. They're local, grass-fed, pasture raised animals with no pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, etc.

The Italian is the best for straight eating while the apple sage is great for casseroles, stir fries, serving to children, and mild stuff like that and the Mexican chipotle is wonderful in breakfast tacos, jambalaya, and other spicier dishes.

This has been a great thread. Thanks for all of the replies.

I am not a vegetarian so I like meat, including or especially pork. It seems like many of the commercial producers are using ground turkey in their sausage. I am sure it is healthier because of the lower fat content, but I don't really care for it much. I guess that venison serves the same function.

Crossfire mentioned smoked cheese. I really like smoked Gouda, but that's even hard to find sometimes. I'll have to check out some of the other varieties. Too bad Muenster is so far away, but maybe I will have to plan a road trip.

What about New Braunfels? That is a German town and is supposed to have excellent sausage.

Dub - Thanks for the warning about the 4 foot links, but if I make the trip I'll buy enough to keep some in the freezer.

I will say it again, you better make a trip to Alvin. I admit I have not tried some of the ones yall have listed but Holmes, Chappel Hill, Jimmy Dean can't even come in the same room with Greaks.

Danpaw, I wasn't ignoring your post. Actually, I went to Alvin this afternoon. I got some vine ripe tomatos [$1.00 per basket], serrano peppers and pickling cucumbers [$0.99/lb] at Froberg's Farms. I went to Greaks, next door and bought some of their summer sausage and venison cheese jalapeno sausage. BTW, Greaks has great potato salad too. Sometimes I am too lazy to make my own, but they make it up fresh, just like my mom used to make, not like at the supermarkets.

Now I've got two gallons of "easy refrigerator" spicy garlic dill pickles in the fridge.
