All of the hopla on this issue seems miniscule ....

If the average age of a college student is 18 to 24 (ie. assumption) and you have to be 21 to own a handgun that's only 50% correct? There only 488k CHLs in the state and of that only 10% are under the age of 24.

So HOW MANY people are we really talking about?

And only in "public" colleges or universities ... at any given time on campus and in class ...

I think that you would be "lucky" to even have one!

Where I work, I know six people who hold CHLs just in the building that I work in - three just in my department. Several others are considering.

Students are not the only people at universities......

You have to be 18 to own a handgun. You have to be 21 to buy one from a licensed dealer.

Quite a few people have done projections on how many guns there would be in a class. Last I saw, there would be 1-2 CHLs in a class of 400.

My guess is that due to the ages involved, most of the guns on campuses will be carried by staff and faculty. There will be some students, but the 21-24 age range is already statically less likely to have a CHL. Of course, even though its a small number, those students that do have a chl have just as much right to be able to defend themselves as anyone else.

What percentage of non-chl holders go to college compared to chl holders? Does being a person seeking higher education increase the probability that one is the type of person to obtain a chl? What if 90% of all chl holders went to college?

Do certain majors have a higher chance of being chl holders?

Maybe science classes would have 10x the chl holders as liberal arts classes.

Then how many would be a criminal justice majors? Or Ag majors? Don't you think many more of those type majors would be more likely co CC?

I think the more people who stop and take the time to think about this law might realize they might benefit from it. Especially if they're robbed and their car broken into once or twice.

If you factor in how many CHL's carry on a daily basis after their first two weeks with a license, you would be lucky indeed to have even one.

Admittedly I am outside the norm, but as a 45 year old full time college student, I would be carrying if allowed!

I estimate that only new 500 CHLers (students) would ever get CHLer and do carry, that's 1 per 1000.

Very true, unfortunately. I used to be staff at a major Texas college, I had a CHL then and absolutely would have carried if able. I think part of what factors into folks not carrying is prohibitions at their workplace (#1) followed by trying to not run afoul of the laws, signs, etc. It is work to stay legal while carrying, and a lot of people end up not being up for it.
