Nupe, fingerprints no longer required on renewals. Same with photos. Although some people have got letters saying what they had on file was not of acceptable.

Re: CHL Licensing Section of DPS Destroying the CHL
Can't say I'm a fan of this setup with L-1. But I don't know any details of the deal. And while some places are relatively 'close', with traffic and all a trip to any of them and back (plus time getting it done) is about two hours. And like others have said, the technology to collect the prints is not that much. So why the sole source? It just smells fishy.
But the biggest thing is if the prints aren't needed, why collect them in the first place? And part of it is my objection to be treated like a criminal (photo'd and fingerprinted) when I've broken no law. But it is what it is.

Awesome! Although, I might want a new picture. I've dropped about 25 pounds since that picture was taken, but if it's a hassle then I'll just leave it be.Greybeard wrote:Nupe, fingerprints no longer required on renewals. Same with photos. Fingerprints are required by the Government Code. That's why I want to change it in 2013.XinTX wrote:But the biggest thing is if the prints aren't needed, why collect them in the first place?

Really? I did not know that.rmr1923 wrote:i don't really see it as that big of an issue, as far as driving all over the state and whatnot. people travel from small towns to big cities at LEAST once a year for holiday shopping...
With the price of diesel (and gasoline) climbing on a daily basis, some of us must take transportation costs into consideration when shopping...for anything.

Us too. After three sets of ink prints, Mrs. Oldgringo got a L-1 set accepted by DPS. Her whole fingerprint runaround only took 100 days beyond the prescribed 60 day wait.jimlongley wrote:My wife's prints are very hard to take, and when her ink prints were refused because they were not well enough defined, they suggested she try L1. L1 ran her all over the place and then told her that her prints were too dim. She eventually was able to get ink prints that worked.
That was a couple of years ago, and now L1, having a virtual monopoly, will be able to play any games they want to with whomever.

Re: CHL Licensing Section of DPS Destroying the CHL
We rarely do it during business hours on a weekday. For most of us in small towns, a trip to the city on a weekday would mean taking a full day off work, and spending an extra $30-50 in fuel alone. Even a minimum wage earner is losing an extra $58 by taking off work.rmr1923 wrote:i don't really see it as that big of an issue, as far as driving all over the state and whatnot. people travel from small towns to big cities at LEAST once a year for holiday shopping, why is it that big of a deal to do it once for your CHL? even if you had to do it again for the renewal, that's 5 years away.
So, $90 for the class, $140 to the state, $40 for gas, $20 for the prints and $60 lost wages makes it $350 base price for a new CHL. Not exactly affordable for someone trying to make ends meet in a lousy economy, especially when they can easily eliminate $120 of that by either doing away with the prints or accepting prints from other sources.

You can submit a new picture. If you do, then you also need to send in a new signature card.C-dub wrote:Awesome! Although, I might want a new picture. Just heard that CHL instructors can't do ink prints after after March 1, but that DPS will accpet inked prints done prior to March 1st up through April 15th. After that, must be from L-1.Charles L. Cotton wrote:Correct. The FBI stopped in 2010 and DPS is doing so March 1st.Keith B wrote:I could be wrong on the date, but I believe DPS said they would no longer accept inked/rolled prints after March 1, 2011. Hopefully someone will correct me if that is not right.

Re: CHL Licensing Section of DPS Destroying the CHL
i believe Charles has stated that all L-1 locations now will do CHL prints. (Or that they all will as of March 1st -- I don't remember now.)Vic wrote:I don't mind the requirement for L1 digital fingerprints, but if DPS is going to hand monopoly power over to a private vendor, the least they could do is require the vendor to supply the service.
To illustrate that example, there is an L1 location in Beaumont. However, they will NOT take fingerprints for the purpose of CHL at this location. It is for teachers and nurses only. The next closest place is almost 2 hours away in Houston.
If DPS would require all L1 locations to take fingerprints for the purpose of CHL, then I wouldn't have a complaint.

All L-1 locations are supposed to be doing prints for CHLs. If anyone goes to one that refuses, please give me the location, and names if possible, and I'll pass those on to DPS.sjfcontrol wrote:i believe Charles has stated that all L-1 locations now will do CHL prints. The L1 location in Beaumont does take CHL prints now. They didn't until DPS mandated L1... How do I know this? Several of my students have been there.Charles L.
