Competitive shooting in cold weather

Dress up for cold weather with a long sleeved shirt, undershirt and gloves and all. You'll be outside for a while. Doing the hands-in-the-pocket thing only goes so far. You'll be out there taping, scoring, etc. Keep your hands warm with gloves. When you're up to shoot, shed the gloves and the thick jacket. Shoot your stage then bundle up again.

Just a quick story....Back at my home club in KY they were really hard core. We only had one match cancelled and that was due to the snow being so deep we could not reach the top of the hill where the range was located because the snow was so deep our trucks bulldozed it up front until they stalled out.

We shot one match in a wind chill condition approaching 20 below. I wore insulated duck blind coveralls so thick I could hardly move. I had my gunbelt wrapped tight around the outside (no loops) and ran a Glock 17 in a Kydex holster. I cleaned the gun prior and only used Remington dry lube to keep it from freezing up. I had to strip every mag change out by hand as nothing was about to drop free on its own.

The glue on the pasters was freezing. We had to keep the pasters inside our outer layer to keep them just warm enough to stick to the cardboard. With every shot, multiple pasters would fly off the target in a flurry. Scoring was liberal that day to say the least.

I was happy my G17 ran all day without a single hiccup. Nearly everybody had some sort of cold related stoppage that day. Several DNFs.

Man, I was glad to get that match overwith. God bless Texas weather!

I started IPSC in Canada - my first match was about 6deg F :-)

Next to cold hands, the biggest problem was the ejected brass melting its way to the bottom of the snow banks - you have to wait until the spring thaw to retrieve your brass :-)
