safe that will fit under my seat?

#1

Post by ruquick77 »

Hello everyone I'm trying to find a safe that I can bolt under my seat in my truck for when I have to leave in the truck.

Any good sites that would have something like that?

Thanks

If it is bolted under the seat access would be very restrictive. There are a number of small strong steel boxes that can be secured by cable to the seat mounting brackets. Example I have never used one, so, I would not be able to tell you what constitutes one that is good.

I am using this. I lose a little space but not a big deal.

I second the Center-of-Mass steel lock box. There are a number of places selling the same thing under the brand "Secure-It". COM is the manufacturer of those. The advantage of ordering directly from COM is if you're purchasing multiple boxes, you can get them keyed alike. I have one in each vehicle.

I have a similar safe that I bought from Cabelas. It's secured by a high tensile strength cable looped through the car seat mounting bracket. It works fine, hides well underneath the seat (with the door closed you cannot tell it's there), and makes it easy to discreetly store or retrieve the weapon and a magazine.

I just realized you & I have met. (Red dot scope from the PIF thread)

We could meet in the same place sometime if you'd like to check it out before you buy one.

I'm surprised by how affordably priced these things are...
2 medium boxes for $60 including shipping.
"Meets TSA guidelines for transporting your weapon in your checked luggage when flying." :thumbs2:

A few questions for owners of these....

1. Are they sturdy? 20 Ga steel is not so thick (.0359 inches / 0.91mm).
2. Which would be easier to pry open.... your locked glove box or this safe?
3. How about the finish? Standard powder coated or "rhino" type coating? How well has the finish held up over use/time/getting knocked around the car/truck?
4. Overall quality? Lock opens and closes easily and securely?, cover closes easily with no gaps?, cable fits securely and easily onto safe?, etc?

I've seen a similar car safe at a gun show, but it was made from much sturdier steel with rhino liner finish... Nice. But much higher cost. ($75/each IIRC)... If these are well made, I'm ok saving the $$... but would love to hear some feedback from current users.

Thanks.!

I have one of these that stays in my car:

http://www.gunvault.com/handgun-safes/n ... t-300.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I did have to fix the cable once. The crimp job from the factory on one end was no good and the end slipped out, but after a few turns in the vice, it is tight as can be. Aside from that, I have had no issues with it. I occasionally swap it from my car to my truck, it holds my XD and spare mag, and slides under the seat with ease. Even with the door open, you would never know it was there unless you were looking under the seat for it. i bought it at Academy for $29.

If someone carrys bolt cutters or maybe a really good wire cutter, yes, they will be able to pull the safe out of my car.... is that a risk? Of course it is, but I feel much better having it locked, even limited, than out in the open where someone with rock to a window could easily find it.

Is the lock on your Bio safe going to stand up better to forced entry than the lock on your glove box?
Suppose I already have a huge glove box with what seems to be a reasonably solid lock.... Why bother with a separate safe?
(just playing :evil2: advocate, looking for details.. thanks.)

Unless you know my safes are under the seats (hidden from view and just happen upon them), you won't know they are there, while almost every vehicle has a glove box (and arm rest) that most people would look for.

Maybe its because I am not a criminal, but if (prior to hearing about these Bio safes, or others that are designed to be hidden from view) I were going to break into a vehicle to see if there were goodies to be had, I don't think I would look under the seats, I would check the usual suspects - glove box with a pry bar I suppose - and the arm rests.
